Updated 17 September 2026. Mongolian ordinary-passport holders travelling to Hohhot, Beijing or another Chinese city for treatment normally need a Chinese visa before departure. Short-term medical treatment is commonly prepared under the S2 “other private matters” category, but the Embassy makes the final decision on category, validity, entries and stay.
Seven-step visa process at a glance
| Step | Action | Prepare | Completion check | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Confirm direction | Identify the likely category from the real medical purpose | Passport, treatment plan, intended stay | Category and submission location identified | Calling medical travel tourism or business |
| 2. Get hospital documents | Confirm acceptance with the Chinese hospital | Appointment, invitation or acceptance note | Name, passport number and dates match | Hospital and form details conflict |
| 3. Apply online | Complete the form and upload files | Digital photo, passport page, hospital files | Application number and printable receipt obtained | Wrong spelling, passport number or date |
| 4. Prepare originals | Arrange the submission pack | Passport, copies, photo, medical and itinerary files | Each traveller has a separate pack | Assuming the patient's application covers a companion |
| 5. Submit | Attend the consular hall as instructed | Full pack and system receipt | Submission, payment or collection slip received | Not checking current hours or extra requirements |
| 6. Pay and wait | Pay and monitor requests for interview or documents | Receipt, reachable phone and email | Collection notice received | Buying non-refundable tickets before issue |
| 7. Collect and check | Verify every key field on the visa | Passport and collection slip | Name, entries, validity and stay are correct | Confusing entry validity with duration of stay |

1. Confirm the visa direction
Use the real medical purpose. Short stays for examination, treatment or follow-up are commonly handled as S2 private matters. If unsure, call the Embassy on 00976-70100110 before filing.
2. Obtain hospital documents
Ask the Chinese hospital for an appointment confirmation or invitation showing the patient's name and passport number, department, proposed dates, hospital contact details, length of stay and source of expenses. Add a concise Chinese or English medical summary when relevant.
3. Apply online
Go to China Online Visa Processing, select the relevant Chinese mission in Mongolia, enter every identity field exactly as printed in the passport, upload the required photo and documents, submit, save the application number and monitor the status. Print the barcode/confirmation document when instructed.
4. Prepare originals
- Passport generally valid for more than six months with a blank visa page.
- Passport data-page copy and online application confirmation.
- Recent compliant photo.
- Hospital appointment/invitation and relevant medical summary.
- China itinerary, accommodation and contact details.
- Old Chinese visas or legal residence in Mongolia where applicable.
Every patient, companion and child needs a separate passport and visa application.
5. Submit at the Embassy
After online review and system instructions, submit at the Consular Hall, Embassy of China, No. 2 Beijing Street, Ulaanbaatar. The published notice says ordinary visa applicants do not need a separate onsite appointment, but they must complete the online process first. Check current opening hours and holidays before travelling.
Until 31 December 2026, applicants for short-stay visas of up to 180 days are exempt from fingerprint collection. Long-stay/residence categories listed by the Embassy still require fingerprints.
6. Pay and collect
Keep the receipt and follow the Embassy's payment and collection instructions. Reduced visa fees run through 31 December 2026; the exact fee depends on nationality and entries. Express service, when accepted, adds USD 25. Do not buy non-refundable travel before issuance.
7. Check the visa immediately
Verify the name, passport number, number of entries, Enter Before date and Duration of Each Stay. Report an error before leaving the counter.
