Ulaanbaatar to Hohhot for Medical Care: Flight, Train and Road Guide (2026)

本站编辑

Updated 17 September 2026. Patients travelling from Ulaanbaatar to Hohhot can fly directly, take the international train, or travel overland through Zamyn-Uud and Erenhot. For older patients, children, reduced mobility or time-sensitive care, a direct flight is usually the safest practical choice. The train suits stable patients who prefer a sleeper. The road route has the most transfers and border uncertainty.

Direct flight

Flights connect Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN) with Hohhot Baita International Airport (HET). Public schedules show services such as MIAT OM257 and Air China CA758 on selected dates, with about 1 hour 40 minutes flying time. Recent public fares have started near USD 130, but dates, baggage and ticket conditions can raise the total. Arrive 2–3 hours before departure and allow another 1–2 hours after landing for immigration, baggage and transfer to the hospital.

Request a wheelchair, priority boarding, approved oxygen equipment or a special meal at least 48 hours in advance. Keep prescription medicines in original packaging with a prescription or doctor's letter. Patients with recent surgery or serious heart/lung disease should obtain medical and airline clearance before flying.

International train

The train passes through Zamyn-Uud and Erenhot. The journey is generally 22–24 hours. China Railway's published reference fares are CNY 1,220 for a hard sleeper and CNY 1,765 for a soft sleeper on the Chinese-operated service, and CNY 1,311 for a hard sleeper on the Mongolian-operated service. Services are limited and do not run daily; passport-based counter purchase may be required.

If through tickets are unavailable, a split journey is possible, but border transfers and handling luggage make it unsuitable for patients travelling alone or with reduced mobility. Allow at least half a day of buffer and do not schedule a time-critical procedure on arrival day.

Road route

The usual route is Ulaanbaatar–Zamyn-Uud–Erenhot–Hohhot, about 1,000 km. Plan 9–12 hours to Zamyn-Uud, 1–4 hours for border processing and transfer, and 5–7 hours from Erenhot to Hohhot. Holidays, weather and queues can extend the journey. Pedestrian crossing is generally not permitted at this border, so use an authorised cross-border vehicle. Confirm vehicle licensing, insurance, transfer points, baggage and cancellation terms in writing.

Patient checklist

  1. Passport, required Chinese visa or other valid entry documents.
  2. Hospital appointment, department, doctor, address and contact number.
  3. Medical summary, reports, imaging and medication list, preferably translated into Chinese or English.
  4. Medicines in original packaging and medical documentation for liquids, injections or oxygen devices.
  5. One or two buffer days, emergency funds, and confirmed airport/station pickup and interpretation.

FAQ

Which route is best?

Direct flights are usually best for patients because they minimise travel time and transfers. Stable patients may choose the sleeper train. Road travel is the least predictable.

Does the international train run every day?

No. Frequency is limited and can change seasonally. Verify with China Railway 12306, Mongolian Railway and the station before departure.

Important: Prices and schedules are planning references, not guaranteed quotes. In a medical emergency, do not use ordinary long-distance transport; contact local emergency services.
