General Surgery Department

The predecessor of the General Surgery Department of Tianjin People's Hospital is Tianjin Second Central Hospital, a large comprehensive hospital built by the Ministry of Health and the Tianjin Municipal Government in the mid-1950s. The Department of General Surgery was founded in 1954. It is a medical and medical education institution with some of the country's famous medical experts at the time, such as Jin Xianzhai, Qu Honghan and Wang Chong as the core. For more than half a century, it has trained a large number of outstanding surgical medical workers for Tianjin and even the national health front. It integrates medical treatment, teaching and scientific research. It is currently specialized in the treatment of liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, gastrointestinal, burns and other diseases, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of various difficult diseases. It also treats local patients from all over the country. At present, the General Surgery Department has 81 beds, 40 doctors, 29 nurses, 7 chief physicians, 17 deputy chief physicians, 6 doctors, and 10 masters. In 2009, it had 40,100 outpatient visits, admitted 2,151 patients, and performed more than 2,000 surgeries of various types. At the same time, the department has launched a number of new businesses and technologies, forming obvious technical features and advantages, enabling many difficult diseases to be effectively diagnosed and treated, many complex operations and major rescues to be successful, and some diagnostic and treatment technologies to reach the domestic advanced level.The department has good scientific research conditions. In 2008, it participated in the research work of the "Research on Comprehensive Treatment System for Pancreatic Cancer" sub-project of the National Eleventh Five-Year Science and Technology Support Project. It also undertakes a number of scientific research projects at all levels. It has many papers included in SCI and published more than 30 papers in national core journals such as "Tianjin Medicine", "Chinese Journal of Hepatobiliary Surgery", "Surgical Theory and Practice", and "Chinese Journal of Modern Medicine". The department maintains scientific research cooperation relationships with the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard Medical School in the United States. In June 2009, Tianjin’s standardized resident training program was launched in the hospital. Through the active work of the hospital’s Teaching Office and the Surgery Teaching and Research Office, the surgical resident standardized training base has exceeded the resident enrollment task of this base.
