The Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University

The Gastrointestinal Surgery Department of the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University has 36 beds and currently has 23 medical staff, including 2 chief physicians, 3 deputy chief physicians, and 1 master's tutor. With multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment (MDT), endoscopic and minimally invasive surgery as its key platforms, the department has formed advantageous subspecialties represented by gastrointestinal cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, abdominal wall hernia, etc., and has gradually formed its own characteristics in the fields of standardized, minimally invasive, and individualized comprehensive treatment of gastrointestinal malignant tumors, hernia and abdominal wall surgery. The annual operation volume is more than 700 (over 65% of which are level 3 and 4 difficult surgeries). Featured Technology: Gastrointestinal Surgery is one of the five sub-clinical departments of the General Surgery Department of the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University. It currently consists of 1 clinical ward and 1 digestive endoscopy room. The ward has 36 approved beds, with an annual outpatient volume of more than 12,000 people, an emergency department of more than 9,000 people, and more than 600 surgeries completed annually. In recent years, gastrointestinal surgery has focused on the construction of professional disciplines and focused on multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment (MDT), endoscopic and minimally invasive surgery. It has formed advantageous subspecialties represented by gastric cancer, colon cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, abdominal wall hernias, retroperitoneal and soft tissue tumors, and clinical nutrition. It has gradually formed new features in the standardized, minimally invasive, and individualized comprehensive treatment of gastrointestinal malignant tumors, as well as emergency surgery, hernia and abdominal wall surgery. The construction and development of specialization has strongly promoted the professionalization and standardization process of diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal and abdominal wall hernia surgical diseases. On the basis of standardized and minimally invasive treatment of gastric cancer and colon cancer, our department took the lead in implementing single-disease payment treatment, which greatly saved patients' treatment costs on the basis of rapid recovery. Our department is the first in our city to carry out small-incision inguinal hernia surgery under local anesthesia, which eliminates the need for fasting, water and bowel preparation before surgery. The patient can get out of bed on the same day after surgery and be discharged 24 hours after surgery, which greatly shortens the hospital stay. Moreover, as the first hernia center in our city to implement case-based payment for inguinal hernia medical insurance, it further reduces patient costs. At the same time, our department has carried out laparoscopic minimally invasive hernia repair and other difficult surgeries to meet the different needs of patients. In the endoscopy center, our department carries out painless gastroenteroscopy and endoscopic treatment, duodenoscopy, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography to treat gastrointestinal polyps, bile duct stones and other diseases, with the advantages of less trauma and faster recovery. Intraoperative endoscopic-assisted surgeries and combined laparoscopic-endoscopic double-scope surgeries are also carried out to provide guarantee and technical support for complex surgeries.
