Neurosurgery Department

Tianjin Children's Hospital

Neurosurgery at Tianjin Children's Hospital is a difficult field in the surgical profession with a long training period. In foreign countries, doctors usually need more than 10 years of experience in adult neurosurgery to engage in clinical work in pediatric neurosurgery.

The Department of Neurosurgery of Tianjin Children's Hospital was established in 1995. Over the years, with the support and help of hospital leaders and experts and professors, and under the leadership of Directors Zhang Qingjiang and Director Ma Xiao, the department has grown from the initial 1 physician and 3 beds to the intensive care unit and accompanying ward in Machang and Longyan hospitals operating simultaneously in an orderly and efficient manner.

Currently, our department has 2 chief physicians, 3 deputy chief physicians, 1 attending physician, and 8 physicians.

The annual outpatient volume of the department has reached more than 3,000, the annual admissions of more than 1,200 children, and the annual operation volume have reached more than 200 cases.

In order to better serve children in Tianjin and surrounding provinces, our department has opened outpatient clinics in Machang campus (specialized clinics every Monday to Friday) and outpatient clinics in Longyan campus (specialized clinics every Tuesday and Friday), and we have done our best to meet the medical needs of children.

Our department has rich experience in related fields such as craniocerebral injury, hydrocephalus, brain tumor, cerebrovascular malformation, spinal cord injury, tethered spinal cord and spinal cord space-occupying lesions, and is actively developing in pediatric functional neurosurgery (epilepsy, cerebral palsy, etc.).

In terms of scientific research, our department actively applies for relevant provincial and municipal projects and publishes many papers in SCI, core and professional journals.

At present, the department is actively exploring and learning. The following aspects are the medical characteristics of our department: 1. In terms of treatment of children's craniocerebral trauma and spinal cord injury: At present, our department is responsible for the treatment of children's craniocerebral trauma and spinal cord injury in Tianjin and surrounding provinces, cities and counties, especially emergency and severe craniocerebral trauma. It has taken the lead in developing intracranial pressure monitoring technology for children's emergency and severe craniocerebral injury, and ranks among the top in comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of children's craniocerebral trauma.

The department receives referrals and treatment of more than 100 cases of paraplegic children with severe craniocerebral injury and spinal cord injury every year, and the treatment effect is remarkable;

Nearly half of subacute simple epidural and subdural hematomas and depressed skull fractures require minimally invasive surgery, which provides quick postoperative results and short recovery time.

2. In the treatment of congenital malformations in children: including hydrocephalus, arachnoid cysts, tethered cord syndrome, meningocele, cerebrovascular malformations and other congenital malformations.

Since the establishment of the department, our department has performed more than 100 ventriculo-peritoneal shunt surgeries in children, leading the country in terms of surgical volume and postoperative efficacy;

He has rich clinical experience in the treatment of tethered cord syndrome. He was the first to carry out microscopic surgical treatment of spinal cord tumors and tethered cord syndrome in our city, which greatly improved the success rate of surgery and reduced the incidence of re-operation;

At the same time, our department actively responds to the multi-department MDT treatment system and the Department of Neonatology to jointly treat premature newborns with giant occipital meningoencephalocele.

3. In the treatment of children's brain tumors: Actively carry out resection of children's intracranial tumors under a variety of approaches under the microscope, including choroid plexus tumors, ependymoma, medulloblastoma, astrocytoma, etc., and the surgical results are good.

4. Other features: including surgical resection of facial and skull tumors, minimally invasive surgery for facial tumors, and optimized surgical incisions to preserve facial skin integrity to the greatest extent possible.

For large-area skin avulsion injuries due to head trauma and debridement and suturing of intracranial foreign bodies, cosmetic suturing techniques are carried out to significantly reduce postoperative scar reaction and hyperplasia.
