General Internal Medicine Department

Tianjin Children's Hospital

The Department of Comprehensive Internal Medicine (Immunity, etc.) of Tianjin Children's Hospital takes childhood immune diseases as its professional features and direction, and establishes a focused comprehensive diagnosis and treatment model based on common and frequently-occurring childhood diseases as its clinical basis.

The clinical specialty of pediatric immunity in our hospital started in the 1990s. The first-generation pioneer Professor Hu Jian, as one of the pioneers of pediatric immunity in China, took the lead in diagnosing and treating childhood rheumatic immune diseases in Tianjin and was the first director of the Department of Immunology.

After more than 20 years, the department has continued to grow. The Department of Comprehensive Internal Medicine (immunology, etc.) was established as an independent department in 2021. The medical team has rich experience in clinical diagnosis and treatment, and has participated in the compilation of multiple medical books, professional guidelines, and expert consensus.

The department is currently the former deputy director, consultant and member of the Immunology Group of the Pediatric Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the Immunology Group of the Pediatric Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a member of the Key Special Steering Committee of the 14th Five-Year Plan National Key Research and Development Plan, and a member of the China Children's Rheumatology and Immunology Alliance.

The comprehensive internal medicine (immunization, etc.) ward is located in the D9 ward of the Racecourse Road campus, with 35 beds. It provides an immunity clinic, a lupus/arthritis clinic and an internal medicine clinic. There are immunology clinics and specialized disease clinics in the Racecourse campus from Monday to Sunday.

The department mainly diagnoses and treats common diseases in pediatric internal medicine. Its specialty is childhood immune diseases including Kawasaki disease, Henoch-Schonlein purpura, purpura nephritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, dermatomyositis, autoinflammatory diseases, Sjögren's syndrome, Takayasu arteritis, Behcet's disease, primary immunodeficiency diseases, Epstein-Barr virus infection-related diseases, hemophagocytic syndrome/macrophage activation syndrome, allergic and allergic diseases, unexplained fever and musculoskeletal and joint pain.

The medical team has rich experience in clinical diagnosis, treatment and nursing. They not only provide standardized diagnosis and treatment of common childhood diseases, but are also good at treating difficult and complex immune diseases in children. They are the first to carry out biologically targeted immunotherapy and immunoadsorption therapy in Tianjin. They can combine immunoadsorption/blood purification to treat severe rheumatic immune diseases such as severe lupus erythematosus and dermatomyositis. The current scope of diagnosis and treatment covers the whole country.

The department has teaching qualifications as a standardized training base for pediatric internal medicine, and is responsible for clinical teaching work at Tianjin Medical University and Tianjin University. The medical team currently has 3 senior professional titles and 1 master's tutor. They have hosted and participated in a number of scientific research projects, new results, and the introduction of new technologies to fill gaps in Tianjin. They have participated in the editing of 5 medical books and published more than 40 core journals and SCI papers.

Professor Hu Jian participated in the second edition of "Children's Immunology" as deputy editor. He was the first to report macrophage activation syndrome in children in China and was the first to propose dehormonal treatment for systemic lupus erythematosus in children.

Professor Hu Jian led the team to write and participate in the "Chinese Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in Children", "China's Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis", "China's Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Juvenile Dermatomyositis", "Chinese Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis", and "Chinese Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Vasculitis in Children".
