Breast Pathology Laboratory

The Breast Pathology Laboratory of Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital was established in 1985. It is currently the only first-level clinical department at home and abroad that specializes in pathological diagnosis and research of breast diseases.

It is the initiator of the National Breast Cancer Pathology Collaboration Group and a national key clinical specialty. It is the only Chinese female breast cancer prevention and control research innovation team of the Ministry of Education, an important component and academic leader and team leader of the 863 major project team of the Ministry of Science and Technology. It is an important component of the National 211 Project Key Disciplines in Colleges and Universities, the National (Ministry of Education) Key Laboratory, and the Tianjin Key Laboratory.

After 36 years of hard work and innovative development, on the basis of standardized, individualized and precise clinical pathological diagnosis, the department has developed technologies such as chemotherapy drug sensitivity testing in primary tumor cell culture that simulates the human body environment, one-step nucleic acid method sentinel lymph node rapid detection, PIK3CA mutation detection, ATP chemiluminescence chemotherapy drug sensitivity testing and other technologies, providing a strong guarantee for the accurate diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

The department has the largest external examination volume for breast pathology diagnosis at home and abroad, the only full information database of breast cancer surgery patients, and has been included in the National Population Health Science Data Sharing Platform.

It has undertaken more than 70 scientific research projects including the National 863 Major, 973 Major, 863 Support, National Natural Science Foundation Key, General, and Youth Projects, received more than 40 million yuan in scientific research funding, and published more than 400 scientific research papers in domestic and foreign academic journals such as Nature Communications.

She has won more than 20 awards, including three provincial and ministerial first prizes, the China Association for Science and Technology’s First National Excellence Award, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Award, the Wuzhou Women’s Science and Technology Progress Award, and the China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese Innovative Talent Award.

There are currently 22 pathological diagnosticians, including 9 with senior professional titles, 3 doctoral supervisors, and 6 master's supervisors;

One academician of the Royal College of Pathologists, one expert from the State Council, and one expert from the Ministry of Health;

1 Tianjin Distinguished Professor, 2 Tianjin Famous Doctors, and 1 Tianjin “131 Innovative” second-level talent;

7 people have overseas study experience, and 10 people have postdoctoral training experience.

The Breast Pathology Laboratory is a standardized training base for doctors of the National Health Commission. Every year, it accepts clinical internship teaching and teaching work from many universities and colleges, including pathologists, senior visiting scholars, and advanced students from home and abroad. It has trained a total of 8 postdoctoral fellows, and more than 400 doctoral and master's students, foreign students, and advanced students.

It has hosted more than 20 large-scale international academic conferences and various training courses such as the International Symposium on Pathology and Clinical Symposium on Individualized Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Cancer, and has conducted extensive academic exchanges with internationally renowned professional medical research institutions in Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy, and has established good scientific research partnerships.

He is the editor-in-chief of more than 20 monographs on breast pathological diagnosis, including "Standards for Pathological Examination of Breast Cancer", "Breast Tumors Volume of Chinese Pathological Classification of Tumors", "Diagnostic Atlas of Breast Tumor Pathology", "Color Atlas of Breast Diseases", "Self-Discovery of Breast Cancer", "Diagnostic Atlas of Breast Cytology", "Diagnostic Pathology of Breast Tumors", "Pathology of Breast Tumors", "Color Atlas of Pathological Pathology of Breast Diseases" second edition, and participated in the compilation of the fourth and fifth editions of "World Health Organization Classification of Breast Tumors".

In line with the purpose of "accurate pathological diagnosis and everything centered on the patient", the department conducts quality control throughout the entire process from specimen reception, fixation, extraction, slicing, staining to report issuance to ensure the quality, safety and accuracy of pathological diagnosis.
