Integrative Medicine Department

Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital

The Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine at Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital was founded in 1978 and is one of the domestic medical teaching and research bases for integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine oncology.

As a traditional department of the hospital, after 40 years of hard work by several generations, the Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine has become a well-known research team in the country for the comprehensive prevention and treatment of tumors using traditional Chinese and Western medicine.

The undergraduate department is the master's degree authorization point of Tianjin Medical University, and is an anti-tumor drug trial institution and dependence drug clinical trial institution recognized by the Ministry of Health and the State Food and Drug Administration.

In 2012, it was rated as “the first batch of demonstration wards for standardized treatment of cancer pain by the Ministry of Health”.

The ward has 90 beds and currently has 18 medical professional technicians, 2 chief physicians, 4 deputy chief physicians, 7 attending physicians, 1 lecturer, 1 assistant researcher, and 3 physicians, including 9 doctors;

Master's degree: 4 people, training more than 10 master's degree students.

A good talent echelon has been formed to ensure the sustainable development of the discipline.

Under the leadership of the current academic leader, Chief Physician Pan Zhanyu, the department has gathered a group of outstanding young and middle-aged experts in integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine oncology. Four treatment groups have been established based on academic expertise: lung cancer, breast cancer, digestive tract tumors, and hepatobiliary and pancreatic tumors. Senior academic leaders in each department are responsible for carrying out medical, teaching, and research work on related diseases, and have formed relatively mature diagnosis and treatment standards for integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine.

The department has established a special TCM outpatient clinic based on disease classification, giving full play to the advantages of traditional medicine to facilitate cancer patients' treatment. It also regularly conducts patient education lectures in the outpatient clinic to popularize knowledge about cancer prevention and anti-cancer.

In 2017, the department had more than 39,600 outpatient visits and more than 3,500 hospitalizations, of which 33% were patients from other places.

Department features

Through more than 30 years of clinical experience and nearly 20 years of experimental research, the Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine has summarized a complete and effective set of experience in treating tumors with integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine.

It has successively developed a variety of pure Chinese medicine anti-cancer preparations, and has maturely carried out technical projects such as spectrum intervention percutaneous penetration of Chinese medicine for cancer pain treatment, Chinese medicine fumigation technology for nerve injury treatment, low-frequency pulsed magnetic field treatment for osteoporosis, three-dimensional moxibustion, Chinese medicine hyperthermia, linear polarized infrared therapy, high-pressure atomized inhalation Chinese medicine treatment and other technical projects. The tongue and pulse comprehensive tumor evaluation system is used in the diagnosis and treatment process, which plays an important role in the multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment of tumor patients.

(1) Integrating traditional Chinese and Western medicine to prevent tumor recurrence and metastasis: After most surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, cancer patients enter a "waiting" stage. Western medicine no longer performs any treatment, and only requires regular review until the tumor recurs or metastasizes before adopting corresponding treatments.

This "waiting" stage is a good period for traditional Chinese medicine to give full play to its advantages.

Based on the principle of "Yin Ping Yang Secret", we use holistic treatment combined with local treatment, and organically combine disease differentiation treatment with syndrome differentiation treatment, which will greatly reduce the chance of recurrence and metastasis of tumor patients and significantly extend the survival period of patients.

(2) The combination of acupuncture and medicine combined with surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy can reduce toxicity, increase efficiency and accelerate recovery: As the main treatment methods of modern medicine, surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy have an irreplaceable position in tumor treatment.

However, while treating tumors, both radiotherapy and chemotherapy have inevitable toxic side effects.

Properly supplemented with traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, it can not only reduce toxicity and increase effectiveness, but also protect normal immune function and minimize damage;

Multidrug resistance to chemotherapy drugs can be solved to a certain extent;

And it can increase the sensitivity of radiotherapy and chemotherapy;

The department combines syndrome differentiation treatment with dialectical care, and combines acupuncture with traditional Chinese medicine. During the recovery period after surgery and the gap period between radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the trauma of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy is repaired as soon as possible, and the adverse reactions during the peri-radiotherapy and chemotherapy period are reduced.

(3) Multidisciplinary joint treatment of refractory tumors: The department team has established a multidisciplinary joint diagnosis and treatment team with departments such as imaging, radiotherapy, pathology, and surgery, and regularly conducts palliative care MDT outpatient clinics. For complex and refractory tumor diseases, comprehensive diagnosis and treatment is carried out through multidisciplinary joint discussions, giving full play to the advantages of traditional Chinese medicine, and truly achieving "human-tumor coexistence."

At the same time, the department has rich experience in the comprehensive treatment of targeted drugs, anti-vascular drugs, and immune-targeted drugs, as well as the treatment of toxic and side effects of targeted drugs with traditional Chinese and Western medicine.

(4) The concept of "treating diseases before they occur" and reversing precancerous lesions: According to the principle of "preventing disease before it becomes a disease, and preventing disease before it becomes a disease", early application of traditional Chinese medicine to treat and intervene precancerous lesions such as atrophic gastritis, liver cirrhosis, cystic breast hyperplasia, cervical erosion, mucosal leukoplakia, chronic ulcerative colitis, etc. Not only will the symptoms be significantly improved, but the risk of cancer can also be significantly reduced.

teaching

As the master's degree authorization point of Tianjin Medical University, the undergraduate department has not only trained more than 10 outstanding master's students, but also extensively participated in domestic and foreign technical exchanges and cooperation. At the same time, it has accepted many domestic and foreign scholars to come to the department for exchanges, including 1 visiting scholar from India, trained 1 Dutch exchange graduate student, and has received many foreign delegations to visit the department and study.

research

The Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine has undertaken nearly 30 national natural science foundation, Tianjin Municipal Science and Technology Commission key projects, Tianjin Municipal Health Bureau projects and national new cancer drug research projects.

"Painless Cancer in 2000" won the Outstanding Achievement Award. In 1997 and 2003, "Standardized Treatment of Pain" won the bid for the Ministry of Health's continuing medical education project. In recent years, many projects have been funded by the China Traditional Chinese Medicine Cancer Research Fund and the CSCO-TCM Cancer Research Fund.

In the past five years, he has published more than 50 papers, including more than 10 papers included in SCI, and has obtained 2 national invention patent authorizations. He is the editor-in-chief of "Clinical Cancer Pain Therapeutics" and co-editor of many books such as "Hepatitis B Research Advances", "Concise Oncology", "Abdominal Oncology", "Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Clinical Oncology in Traditional Chinese Medicine", "Tumor Palliative Supportive Treatment Tutorial" and other books.

In March 2011, he took the lead in launching a public welfare survey on cancer pain epidemiology for cancer patients in all secondary and tertiary hospitals in eight provinces and cities in northern China - "Operation Spring". It has had a huge impact in the academic world and made a significant contribution to the epidemiological survey of pain. It was awarded by the Department of Medical Affairs of the Ministry of Health. In 2017, he took the lead in establishing the Regional Alliance for Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine oncology, which promoted the development of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine oncology in Tianjin and was well received by the industry.
