The Department of Urology Oncology of Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital was formerly the Department of Pelvic Urology Oncology of Tianjin Cancer Hospital with a history of 60 years, founded by Professor Jin Jiarui.
During the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" period, in order to meet the needs of cancer patients, optimize the layout of disciplines, and refine the professional layout, the hospital reorganized the Department of Urological Oncology, with Professor Yao Xin as the department director.
After years of development, the department has grown from 6 physicians at the time of its inception to 15 physicians now, including 5 chief physicians, 2 deputy chief physicians, 1 postdoctoral fellow, and 7 with doctorate degrees.
The discipline has gradually formed the characteristics of a systematic and standardized treatment of urological and male reproductive system tumors based on surgical treatment, combined with comprehensive treatment models such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy.
Department Director Yao Xin, MD, postdoctoral fellow, chief physician, master's tutor, member of the Urology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and deputy director of the Genitourinary Tumor Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association.
The department is currently divided into three major treatment groups: bladder cancer, kidney cancer, and prostate cancer, all of which are composed of old, middle-aged and young people. Specialized outpatient clinics for prostate cancer, kidney cancer, and bladder cancer are opened on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons respectively.
In order to give full play to the technical characteristics of various related disciplines in the cancer hospital, the Department of Urology has also established a multidisciplinary joint consultation platform including urology department, pathology department, imaging center, radiotherapy department, interventional department, medical oncology department and biotherapy center, and carried out cold treatment of prostate cancer and kidney cancer. Clinically practical technical methods include cryotherapy and interventional therapy, CyberKnife treatment of metastatic urological tumors, diagnosis and surgical treatment of early bladder cancer guided by narrow-band spectral imaging (NBI), and research on bladder preservation strategies for invasive bladder cancer under the guidance of adjuvant and neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
On the basis of inheriting the "sharp resection" tradition of radical oncology surgery of the older generation, the department has adapted to the new characteristics of tumor onset and the new needs of tumor patients, and has successively carried out and improved a number of new surgeries featuring minimally invasive, functional preservation and reconstruction, including laparoscopic radical nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, renal pelvis cancer, ureteral cancer radical resection, adrenalectomy, etc. With the introduction of the da Vinci robot in the hospital, it has also actively carried out various robot-assisted urological surgeries.
Nephron-sparing surgery is one of the specialty surgeries of the department. In addition to inheriting traditional surgical techniques, it also performs renal segmental artery occlusion and "zero ischemia time" partial nephrectomy.
In order to standardize and improve the safety of partial nephrectomy surgery, the department has launched a number of clinical studies.
By introducing the nephron-sparing surgery safety scoring system and combining it with imaging tumor risk assessment, the selective indications for nephron-sparing surgery have been extended to some patients with stage Ib or even stage II renal cancer.
Through follow-up research on the safety of resection margins, the concept of safe resection margins in nephron-sparing surgery was proposed.
Among more than 300 nephron-sparing surgeries performed in the past five years, the follow-up local recurrence rate was 0.5%, which is far lower than the recurrence level reported in the literature.
The "Study on the Safe Resection Range of Nephron-Sparing Surgery" conducted by Chen Xusheng et al. reported the safe resection margin of partial nephrectomy for T1b stage renal cancer, and was accepted for publication in Urology magazine.
In terms of basic research, it currently undertakes 4 National Natural Science Foundation projects and 1 National Oncology Clinical Research Center project, and has published more than 30 SCI-collected papers in foreign magazines.
Through the efforts of the department's doctors, we also have a complete renal cancer tissue specimen bank.
Cooperate with international centers to carry out multiple collaborative research including kidney cancer gene chip research, pathological subtyping, etc.
In the past few years, relying on the National Pharmacology Clinical Base, it has participated in international multi-center clinical trials of a variety of drugs, making contributions to research in new fields of tumor treatment.
Drawing on the long culture of Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital with a history of more than 150 years, and adhering to the hospital motto of high ethics and high ethics, advocating innovation and perfection, the Department of Urological Oncology of Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital is facing the challenges of the future with a new look.
