The Department of Maxillofacial Otolaryngology Oncology of Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital inherited the Department of Head and Neck Oncology founded by Professor Li Shuling, the founder of head and neck cancer in my country. At the end of 2004, in order to meet the needs of department construction and discipline development, the Department of Head and Neck Oncology was divided into two independent departments. Head and neck surgery experts Professor Zhang Lun, Professor Wang Xudong, Director Xu Benyi, Director Zhang Wenchao, Director Jin Rui and Director Tao Yingjie continue to engage in medical work in the Department of Maxillofacial Otolaryngology Oncology.

On the basis of inheriting the medical and technical characteristics of the original Department of Head and Neck Oncology, the Department of Maxillofacial Otolaryngology Oncology has continuously made breakthroughs and innovations through continuous technological improvement and innovation, forming a domestically leading and internationally first-class head and neck tumor diagnosis and treatment team.

Currently, there are 93 actual beds and 59 medical staff, including 3 chief physicians, 6 deputy chief physicians and 8 attending physicians.

There are 2 resident doctors and 1 scientific researcher.

The Department of Maxillofacial Otolaryngology Oncology specializes in the surgical resection of benign and malignant tumors of the oral cavity, maxillofacial region, otolaryngology, thyroid gland, and other head and neck tumors, and the comprehensive treatment of mid- and late-stage head and neck malignant tumors. It focuses on salvage surgeries for advanced and recurrent malignant head and neck tumors and plastic repair of large area defects after resection.

The core technologies of the department include preoperative induction chemotherapy for mid-to-late stage head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, various partial laryngeal surgeries that preserve laryngeal function, hypopharyngectomy, voice reconstruction after total laryngectomy, multifunctional cervical lymph node dissection, microsurgical repair, laparoscopic minimally invasive surgical treatment (direct laryngoscope, nasal endoscope, laparoscopic-assisted and da Vinci robotic surgery), planned arterial resection and reconstruction surgery, etc. It focuses on radical tumor cure, functional preservation and repair and beauty, which greatly improves patient survival and quality of life.

While actively doing clinical work, he is committed to basic research on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, exploring new targets for anti-head and neck squamous cell carcinoma treatment, achieving medical transformation, and improving patient survival.

At present, the department has won 7 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 2 National Key Specialty Construction Projects, 1 National Cancer Clinical Center project, and more than 10 provincial, ministerial, bureau-level and school-level projects;

The leading department took the lead in carrying out 3 clinical trials to provide evidence-based evidence to solve practical clinical problems and guide the clinical treatment of diseases.

He has published more than 40 SCI papers and more than 100 papers in core journals in Naturecommunication, Clinicalcancerresearch, Cancerletters, MolecularCancerTherapeutics and other magazines.

In addition, the Department of Maxillofacial Otorhinolaryngology Oncology is responsible for the teaching of oncology postgraduate students at Tianjin Medical University and the training courses for oncologists across the country.

Currently, the department has 2 doctoral supervisors and 3 master's students. It recruits 110-12 doctoral and master's students and 10-14 training doctors every year.

He has edited and participated in the editing of many books in the field of head and neck tumors, including "Head and Neck Oncology", "New Head and Neck Oncology", "Head and Neck Oncology Third Edition", "Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology", "Head and Neck Oncology and Surgical Repair", "Oncology Surgery", "Head and Neck, Intracranial and Spinal Canal Oncology", and participated in the formulation of "Comprehensive Treatment of Head and Neck Squamous Carcinoma: Chinese Expert Consensus 2013 Edition" and "Expert Consensus on Diagnosis and Treatment of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma (2016 Edition)".

At the same time, the Department of Maxillofacial Otorhinolaryngology Oncology actively engages in exchanges and cooperation with many well-known foreign cancer research centers.

Established long-term cooperation and exchanges with international organizations in the field of head and neck tumor surgery and basic research, and jointly completed multiple cases of difficult surgeries and MDT diagnosis and treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma;

Jointly established an MDT diagnosis and treatment project for mid-to-late stage head and neck squamous cell carcinoma with the Taiwan Head and Neck Oncology Society to achieve regular mutual visits and exchanges;
