Colorectal Tumor Department
Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital
The Colorectal Oncology Department of Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital was formerly the Department of Abdominal Oncology established in 1972 by Professor Jin Xianzhai, a famous Chinese oncology expert. Due to the development of the discipline, it was established as an independent department in 2004. Professor Liu Jianzhong and Professor Kong Dalu served as department directors.
The department currently has 73 approved beds. It focuses on surgical treatment and features standardized and comprehensive treatment of various types of colorectal tumors. It mainly treats patients with various abdominal and pelvic tumors such as colon tumors, rectal tumors, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, liver metastases from colorectal tumors, and retroperitoneal tumors.
The department currently has 19 physicians, including 5 chief physicians, 5 deputy chief physicians, 8 attending physicians, 1 resident physician, and 1 assistant researcher.
The chief physician and deputy chief physician all have experience studying abroad in large international cancer centers, and all young and middle-aged physicians have a doctorate in medicine.
Many physicians in the department serve in major professional societies.
The department is well-known at home and abroad for its strong clinical strength and advanced surgical technology. It has a domestic first-class and internationally leading professional colorectal tumor surgery team. It attracts a large number of patients from the city and other places every year. The annual operation volume reaches 1,200, of which colorectal cancer surgery accounts for more than 90%. It has maturely carried out a variety of minimally invasive surgical methods including traditional laparoscopy, robots (Da Vinci), etc., to reduce patient pain and shorten hospitalization time.
The department emphasizes standard total mesocolectomy (CME) and total mesorectal excision (TME). The standard and thorough resection range can not only make the patient's pathological staging more accurate, but also provide an important basis for formulating a more precise and individualized comprehensive treatment plan after surgery, and can also improve the patient's prognosis.
The department also has unique advantages in low rectal surgery. Ultra-low anus-preserving radical rectal cancer surgery avoids the inconvenience caused by fistula. The pelvic autonomic nerve is preserved during radical rectal cancer surgery, which not only achieves the purpose of radical cure, but also preserves sexual function, greatly improving the patient's quality of life.
The department's standardized treatment and patient prognosis are in a leading position in the country, and it has also participated in the formulation of national standardized treatment standards for colon and rectal cancer.
The department adheres to the Multidisciplinary Team Consultation (Multiple Disciplinary Team, MDT) system for special and difficult cases of colorectal tumors, holds regular seminars, and invites experts from multiple related disciplines such as surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiotherapy, imaging, and pathology to discuss together. Based on a detailed discussion of each patient's condition, targeted treatment measures are adopted to achieve the purpose of receiving an individualized treatment plan.
Conversion therapy has increased the surgical resection rate of metastatic colorectal cancer. At the same time, radiofrequency ablation, CyberKnife and other treatment methods combined with it have greatly improved the radical cure rate and survival rate of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.
Neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy not only improves the anus-preserving rate for patients with low rectal cancer, but also reduces the postoperative recurrence rate and improves the patient's quality of life.
While actively completing a large amount of clinical work, the department strives to carry out clinical and basic research on colorectal tumors, presides over and completes two National Natural Science Foundation projects, more than ten projects at provincial, ministerial, bureau and school levels, and participates in more than ten domestic large-scale prospective multi-center clinical studies. It publishes SCI collections every year. He has published more than ten papers in core journals, participated in the compilation of many academic monographs such as "Abdominal Oncology" and "Tumor Surgery", and presided over the research on "Functional Continuous Jejunal Interposition Gastric Replacement Surgery" and "Total Gastrectomy and Digestive Tract Reconstruction", and won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the third prize of the Tianjin Science and Technology Progress Award respectively.
The department is committed to continuously improving discipline construction, driving discipline progress, enhancing influence in the industry, and always contributing to the overall development of the hospital.
