The Radiotherapy Department of Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital is a cancer treatment center with a long history and heritage. The department was founded in 1970 (radiation therapy group), with 30 approved beds and 5 doctors.

In 1978, the Department of Radiotherapy was established with 50 approved beds. Jin Xianzhai was the director and there were 8 doctors.

By the end of 1987, the number of approved beds increased to 90, and the number of doctors increased to 24.

In order to carry out in-depth radiotherapy for tumors in different parts of the department, the department is divided into four groups: head and neck, chest, abdomen, and breast, each focusing on their work.

In November 1999, the department established two secondary departments, namely: Radiation Physics Room and Maintenance Room.

There are 84 staff members in total.

In 2013, the Radiobiology Laboratory was established.

In 2008, based on the original professional groupings, three professional groups were established: head and neck tumors and lymphoma, chest tumors, and abdominal and pelvic tumors. Doctors strictly admit and treat patients according to disease types.

As of October 2011, there were 146 approved beds and more than 100 staff members.

As of April 2018, the Department of Radiotherapy has established the first radiotherapy ward, the second radiotherapy ward, the comprehensive radiotherapy ward, the radiotherapy center, and the Cyber Knife Center, with more than 160 medical staff.

These include doctors, technicians, physicists, engineers, nurses and other professionals.

The radium tubes and radium needles brought back from abroad by Professor Jin Xianzhai, the father of Chinese oncology, were first used in hospitals for the treatment of cervical cancer patients and head and neck tumor patients.

In 1979, under the personal care of Professor Jin Xianzhai, a hyperthermia research group was established. The group undertook and completed the national "Eighth Five-Year Plan" research project.

In order to cooperate with tumor temperature measurement, Lin Shiyin, Li Ruiying and others successfully developed non-interference temperature measurement technology and instruments for tumor hyperthermia, and won the second prize of the National Invention Award.

Since 1990, radical radiotherapy for early-stage breast cancer after breast-conserving surgery has been carried out.

This technology is becoming more and more perfect and has now become a routine treatment after breast-conserving surgery for breast cancer, and won the second prize of the Medical University's Scientific and Technological Progress Award.

Using the Iridium 192 post-loading machine, we have carried out intraluminal treatment and inter-tissue implantation treatment of tumors such as lung cancer, esophageal cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, floor of the mouth cancer, tongue cancer, breast cancer, etc. We have cooperated with the Department of Surgery to carry out intraoperative inter-tissue treatment of limb tumors, brain tumors, and retroperitoneal tumors, and achieved good results.

Since the end of 2006, the Department of Radiotherapy has introduced the CMS intensity-modulated radiotherapy planning system. Under the auspices of President Wang Ping, it has successfully carried out conformal intensity-modulated radiotherapy, which has improved the efficacy of radiotherapy for patients with intermediate and advanced stages and minimized the risk of radiation complications. So far, it has completed intensity-modulated radiotherapy for head and neck tumors, chest tumors, and abdominal and pelvic tumors, and achieved good therapeutic effects.

At the end of the same year, a CyberKnife stereotactic radiosurgery treatment equipment was purchased, and stereotactic radiosurgery was carried out for intracranial tumors, spinal canal tumors, body tumors, etc., and achieved good results.

At present, the Department of Radiotherapy can carry out conventional radiotherapy, conformal radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiotherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, post-loading and inter-tissue brachytherapy, hyperthermia and other radiotherapy techniques for tumors in various parts of the body. It has a technical team with precise positioning, precise planning and precise treatment, and has become one of the well-known radiotherapy centers in the country.

At present, under the leadership of the subject leader Professor Wang Ping, the Department of Radiation Therapy has made great achievements in clinical, scientific research and teaching aspects. It currently has 3 doctoral supervisors and 4 master supervisors.

During the 12th Five-Year Plan period, we actively carried out research on the application of CyberKnife, an image-guided stereotactic radiotherapy robot technology, introduced high-precision radiotherapy technologies such as volumetric intensity-modulated radiotherapy and image-guided radiotherapy, and cooperated with domestic and foreign R&D personnel to develop new image-guided radiotherapy technologies. We successfully applied various advanced radiotherapy technologies to the treatment of malignant tumors such as lung cancer, esophageal cancer, cervical cancer, and nasopharyngeal cancer, and achieved good clinical treatment results.

A radiation biology laboratory has been established to conduct in-depth research on molecular biology issues in the process of tumor radiation therapy, and to explore various aspects to better enhance the efficacy of radiation therapy in treating malignant tumors.

The CyberKnife team led by Professor Yuan Zhiyong has successfully applied advanced hypofractionated stereotactic radiotherapy technology to the treatment of early-stage lung cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, vertebral body metastasis cancer, brain tumors, etc., and has conducted systematic research on the radiobiological basis of hypofractionated radiotherapy, and also conducted extensive research on issues related to radiation physics during the application of CyberKnife.

Professor Zhao Lujun led the team to actively carry out research on individualized radiotherapy for lung cancer, and conducted a large number of studies on postoperative radiotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer, combined application of radiotherapy and chemotherapy for small cell lung cancer, radiation-induced lung injury, combined application of radiotherapy and immunotherapy, and the role of transforming growth factor in tumor radiotherapy.

Chief Physician Zhu Zhu, Deputy Chief Physician Wang Peiguo, and Chief Physician Pang Qingsong have also conducted a number of clinical and basic research on cervical cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, and esophageal cancer respectively, improving the efficacy of tumor treatment.

During this period, the radiotherapy team led by Dean Wang Ping obtained 15 national projects and 6 provincial and ministerial projects during the 12th Five-Year Plan period, published more than 60 SCI papers, with a total impact factor of 140 points, trained more than 30 master's students (more than 10 graduated), 7 doctoral students (1 graduated), and 6 people went abroad for further study.

Dean Wang Ping was rated as a young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions by the Ministry of Health in 2014, and received a special allowance from the State Council.

The Department of Radiotherapy is one of the advantageous departments of our hospital. It handles more than 500 radiotherapy patients every day, ranking at the forefront of major cancer centers across the country, and its influence across the country is also growing.

Professor Wang Ping, the subject leader, is currently the chairman of the Special Committee on Radiotherapy oncology of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association and a standing member of the Radiation Oncology Branch Committee of the Chinese Medical Association. Director Yuan Zhiyong and Deputy Director Zhao Lujun of the Department of Radiotherapy are both standing members of the Special Committee on Radiotherapy oncology of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association. There are also many members or standing committee members in other national academic organizations on radiotherapy oncology, which indicates that the radiotherapy discipline has a high academic status in the country.
