Pancreatic Tumor Department

Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital

The Pancreatic Oncology Department of Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital was established in 2008 and is the earliest pancreatic oncology department established in China.

After more than ten years of development under the leadership of Professor Hao Jihui, it has become one of the leading units in the clinical diagnosis, treatment and translational research of pancreatic tumors in China. In 2016, it was successfully selected as a key discipline of the National Cancer Clinical Research Center.

As the largest pancreatic tumor diagnosis and treatment center in the north, it currently has 60 beds and 12 doctors, including 2 chief physicians, 5 deputy chief physicians, and 5 attending and resident physicians;

There is one doctoral supervisor and five master's supervisors. Many doctors have studied abroad or trained in famous universities in the United States, Japan, Sweden, etc.

The diagnosis and treatment scope of the center includes comprehensive treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the pancreas, duodenum, biliary tract and retroperitoneum with surgery as the core.

In recent years, the center has continuously improved the level of medical diagnosis and treatment, and has promoted a series of new technologies: pancreaticoduodenectomy with standard/extended lymph node dissection for malignant tumors in the ampulla, low bile duct, and pancreatic head; pancreatoduodenectomy with artery-first approach for malignant tumors in the uncinate process; and RAMPS surgery for pancreatic body and tail cancer, which has greatly increased the rate of tumor R0 resection and delayed the disease-free survival time of patients.

In addition, minimally invasive pancreatic surgery has successively carried out laparoscopic and da Vinci robotic pancreatoduodenectomy, spleen-preserving pancreatic body and tail resection of benign pancreatic tumors, which has greatly alleviated the pain of patients and shortened the hospitalization time;

The center explores and carries out comprehensive treatment of localized tumor radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy for patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer;

The center is also at the leading domestic and world-class level in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors;

The center hosts and participates in a number of clinical trials and studies to provide pancreatic cancer patients with internationally synchronized diagnosis and treatment methods.

The Department of Pancreatic Oncology diagnoses and treats more than 30,000 patients annually, and completes more than 600 pancreatic surgeries of various types annually on average, forming the disciplinary characteristics of “individualized comprehensive treatment of pancreatic tumors with surgical treatment as the core”.

Relying on the National Cancer Clinical Research Center, the team has carried out a series of original basic translational research on pancreatic cancer, which has greatly improved the diagnosis and treatment of the disease and extended the survival time of patients. The basic and clinical research on refined diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer has won the first prize of Tianjin Science and Technology Progress Award and the first prize of China Anti-Cancer Association Science and Technology Award.

Scientific research and innovation achievements

Team members have received a total of 56 research funds at the provincial or ministerial level, including 45 National Natural Science Foundation key projects, outstanding youth funds, major international cooperation projects, general projects, and youth funds;

Obtained 22 innovative talent support plans at all levels,

These include the Yangtze River Scholars Distinguished Professor of the Ministry of Education, the Ten Thousand Talents Program Leading Talents, the National Hundreds and Thousands Talents, the Tianjin Distinguished Professor, and the Tianjin 131 Innovative Talents;

Selected into the Ministry of Science and Technology’s “Digestive Tract Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment” Innovation Team, Tianjin 131 Talent Innovation Team and other titles.

The center has various research funds of more than 20 million yuan and has published more than 100 SCI papers in authoritative academic journals on oncology such as Gastroenterology, Nature Communications, Advanced Functional Materials, and Cancer Research.

Established the "Tianjin Model" for early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, proposed chemoprevention strategies for pancreatic cancer, and improved the cure rate of pancreatic cancer. As the main person in charge, he participated in the formulation of the "China Pancreatic Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines" and has important academic influence in the same field at home and abroad.
