Pediatric Oncology

Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital

The Department of Pediatric Oncology of Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital was founded in 1982. It was personally initiated and established by Professor Jin Xianzhai, the founder of oncology in my country, based on the characteristics of children's tumors. It implements a diagnosis and treatment model that integrates internal medicine, surgery, radiotherapy and other methods. It is a professional diagnosis and treatment base for children's tumors in my country.

It now has a large-scale, multi-disciplinary team of pediatric oncology professionals, including internal medicine, surgery, radiotherapy, radiology, pathology, anesthesiology and child care professionals.

There are 35 pediatric clinical medical staff, including 11 physicians, 1 scientific research assistant, 5 technical staff with associate senior professional titles or above, 4 with doctorate degrees, and 5 with master's degrees.

The children's tumor team also includes: 4 pediatric anesthesiologists from the Department of Anesthesiology, 3 from the pediatric tumor radiation therapy professional group from the Radiotherapy Department, 3 from the pediatric tumor pathology sub-professional group from the Pathology Department, and 2 from the pediatric tumor radiation imaging professional group from the Radiation Imaging Department.

There are currently 38 hospital beds, and outpatient day ward treatment is also carried out, mainly treating children and adolescents under the age of 18 with various benign and malignant tumors.

The annual outpatient visits are more than 9,000, the hospital treats about 2,000 children, and performs more than 300 operations.

Malignant tumors in children treated mainly include: lymphoma;

Neuroblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, hepatoblastoma, nephroblastoma, pancreatoblastoma, osteosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma, primitive neuroectodermal tumor, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, etc.;

Benign tumors mainly include: hemangioma, lymphangioma, various benign tumors of bone and soft tissue, etc.

The Department of Pediatric Oncology can provide full-process management and one-stop service for children with cancer, and insists on providing a standardized diagnosis and treatment model that combines multiple disciplines such as tumor molecular diagnosis, surgery, internal medicine, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy, so that children with cancer can receive reasonable and standardized diagnosis and treatment.

The department adheres to the multidisciplinary team consultation and cooperation system for children's oncology to formulate the best individualized treatment plan for children, so that children can receive accurate diagnosis and provide guarantee for their treatment and prognosis stratification, so as to achieve the expected curative effect.

Through neoadjuvant chemotherapy, tumors that cannot be removed by primary surgery can be completely resected.

The department has carried out clinical trials of new drugs in recent years to provide survival opportunities for children with relapsed and refractory malignant tumors.

Among them, the radiotherapy team led by deputy chief physician Wang Peiguo of the Department of Radiotherapy can combine it with chemotherapy in a timely manner and use radiotherapy technologies such as conformal intensity modulated radiotherapy, radiofrequency ablation, and cyberknife to significantly improve the cure and survival rates of children with malignant tumors such as rhabdomyosarcoma, neuroblastoma, and Wilms tumor.

The sub-professional group of children's tumor pathology department led by Director Cao Wenfeng is in line with international standards, combining cell morphology/cytochemistry, molecular genetics, molecular biology and other technologies, and its treatment level is in a leading position in the country.

The Department of Pediatric Oncology is the chairman unit of the Pediatric Oncology Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association. It attracts a large number of patients every year, and the proportion of patients from other places is as high as 75%.

It leads the work of the National Neuroblastoma Collaborative Group and is the chairman unit of the Pediatric Oncology Professional Committee of the Tianjin Anti-Cancer Association. It has established and maintained extensive exchanges and collaborations with many medical research institutions at home and abroad. It dynamically pays attention to the new progress in basic research and clinical diagnosis and treatment of children's tumors at home and abroad, timely introduces and carries out new and effective treatment methods and methods at home and abroad, continuously improves the level of comprehensive treatment based on surgery, and constantly updates treatment concepts.

In recent years, the Department of Pediatrics has taken the lead in China in using sequential autologous stem cell transplantation to treat high-risk, refractory and relapsed childhood malignant solid tumors. It has also established procedures related to stem cell collection and high-dose chemotherapy with the support of autologous stem cells, and has incorporated sequential autologous stem cell transplantation into the standardized treatment of high-risk neuroblastoma.

In recent years, it has cooperated with the University Hospital of Hong Kong to provide support and help for children with high-risk neuroblastoma to receive GD2 monoclonal antibody treatment after stem cell transplantation.

The department also focuses on exchanges and cooperation with foreign countries, and signed a strategic cooperation memorandum with the German Cancer Research Center to improve the level of domestic pediatric tumor genomics research.

Through exchanges and cooperation at home and abroad, it has achieved great breakthroughs in scientific research. It has become the first domestically approved unit to be funded by the National Ministry of Science and Technology’s key R&D program, and has conducted in-depth basic and clinical research on high-risk neuroblastoma, with a funding of approximately 12.99 million yuan.

Paying attention to teaching and training, it trains master's and doctoral students on average every year, and has trained more than 20 high-level talents.
