Pathology Department

The Department of Pathology of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital was established in the 1950s by Professor Wang Deyan, a famous Chinese tumor pathologist, and Professor Tan Yubin of endocrine pathology. The current director is Professor Sun Baoan.

The Pathology Department of the General Hospital, like the pathology departments of many well-known domestic medical schools, is part of the pathology teaching and research section of the university. The teachers in the teaching and research section are responsible for the diagnosis of the pathology department and are under the dual leadership of the university and the hospital.

The director of the pathology department is served by the director of the teaching and research section.

After more than half a century of unremitting efforts, the Department of Pathology of the General Hospital has gradually developed and grown.

The Department of Pathology is now a key construction discipline of the national “211 Project” and is a pathological diagnosis and research base with great influence in China that integrates medical treatment, teaching and scientific research.

The Pathology Department of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital currently has 34 medical technicians. The medical team includes 4 professors and 8 associate professors. The technical team includes 1 chief technician, 9 supervisor technicians and laboratory technicians.

Among the doctors, 14 have doctoral degrees, and among the technicians, 7 have master's degrees.

After decades of discipline construction, an academic team with a combination of old, middle-aged and young people, high academic level, rigorous academic style and rich practical experience has been formed, including 1 director of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, 1 honorary vice president of the Pathology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctors Association, and 1 president of the Pathology Branch of the Tianjin Medical Doctors Association. , 1 deputy chairman of the Pathology Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, 1 national remote consultation expert for difficult cases from the Ministry of Health, 1 member of the subject evaluation group of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council, 1 national outstanding teacher, 1 national excellent PhD instructor, 1 Tianjin famous teaching teacher, and 3 Tianjin "131" talents.

There are many young and middle-aged doctors and technicians serving as committee members and youth committee members of various professional societies.

Many medical technicians have won honorary titles such as Tianjin’s “Model Worker” and Tianjin’s “May 1st Labor Medal”.

In terms of clinical pathological diagnosis, the Department of Pathology’s diagnostic workload has been increasing at an annual rate of about 20% in recent years, and it is responsible for 39,000 routine pathological diagnoses, 52,481 immunohistochemistry cases, 1,635 frozen sections, and 3,700 cytological diagnosis cases annually.

In addition to completing the work of the hospital, the department receives more than 3,000 difficult case consultations from all over the country and this city every year. It is one of the units with the highest level of pathological diagnosis and the largest workload in our city.

In order to adapt to the current medical progress and meet clinical needs, the Department of Pathology has vigorously strengthened department construction year by year, relying on talent advantages and advanced instruments and equipment to introduce and establish a number of new pathological diagnosis technologies: including fully automatic immunohistochemical staining, liquid-based cytology, fine needle aspiration biopsy, bone marrow biopsy and molecular diagnostic technology, which has greatly improved the level of pathological diagnosis, promoted the further standardization and refinement of pathological diagnosis, and effectively cooperated with the in-depth development of new diagnosis and treatment technologies in clinical departments.

At the same time, the Department of Pathology has vigorously promoted the development of various sub-specialties within the department, and is gradually establishing sub-specialty diagnosis of various systemic diseases. It has also actively established close academic ties and exchanges and cooperation with relevant clinical departments, and has participated in the multidisciplinary treatment (MDT) work of various clinical departments many times, so that pathological diagnosis can better serve clinical services.

As the medical center of Tianjin, the Department of Pathology actively participates in the construction of the hospital's "medical consortium". With the support of hospital leaders, it has prepared to build the "General Hospital Medical Consortium Pathology Diagnostic Center". The reconstruction and expansion of the pathology center has been completed. The department's working conditions have been greatly improved, its appearance has been completely renewed, and a variety of advanced instruments and equipment have been put into use. Now it has become a high-level pathological diagnosis center with complete facilities and first-class technology in our city.

In terms of teaching, the Department of Pathology undertakes 7,304 hours of pathology teaching for undergraduates, postgraduates, and international students in various majors of Tianjin Medical University every year. It has won honors such as Tianjin Excellent Courses and Excellent Teaching Courses for International Students. It has edited more than 20 textbooks and monographs. Over the years, the department has trained more than 50 doctoral students and more than 150 master's students. It has been awarded the title of National 100 Outstanding Doctoral Supervisors. Many graduates with doctoral and master's degrees have become the backbone of pathology departments in many hospitals in our city and across the country.

In addition, the Department of Pathology is a standardized training base for pathology residents in Tianjin. In recent years, a total of 47 pathology residents have been trained, becoming the cradle of training for pathology professionals in the city.

Since the 1970s, the Department of Pathology has been commissioned by the Ministry of Health to hold 40 "National Pathologist Training Classes" and has trained more than 400 pathological diagnosticians for our city and the country, giving full play to its role as a pathology teaching base.

In terms of scientific research, through the construction of key disciplines of the “211 Project”, the scientific research strength of the Department of Pathology has been significantly improved.

A number of research results have been achieved in the fields of tumor angiogenesis research, the pathogenesis of digestive tract tumors and inflammatory bowel disease, and lung cancer and breast cancer cell research.

In the past fifteen years, the Department of Pathology has hosted 1 National Natural Science Foundation of China key project, 9 general and youth projects, 11 provincial and municipal projects, and published more than 400 papers, including 112 SCI-indexed papers, with the highest impact factor of 11.930.

He won one first-class Science and Technology Progress Award from the China Anti-Cancer Association, two first-class Tianjin Science and Technology Progress Awards, two second-class awards, five third-class awards, and one second-class Natural Science Award from the Ministry of Education.

At present, the Department of Pathology of the General Hospital is continuing to carry out discipline construction with a new look. As an important part of the "medical consortium", the department will further expand and optimize the academic echelon, expand work areas, strengthen the discipline's radiation capabilities, especially provide support and assistance for pathological diagnosis in grassroots hospitals, build a center for pathological diagnosis, scientific research and talent training in Tianjin, and make greater contributions to the development of various clinical disciplines of the General Hospital.

In May 2016, it began to receive thyroid diagnostic puncture specimens from Binhai Hospital. Up to now, it has signed contracts with 2 hospitals for pathological diagnosis services.

In 2017, the Pathology Diagnosis Center was included in the Precision Medicine Center and Large Pathology Platform cooperation project based on the hospital's work needs. From January to November 2017, it received 9 specimens from Binhai Hospital and 1,603 specimens from Airport Hospital.

In the first half of 2018, a total of 1,107 pathological specimens were received from Airport Hospital, a year-on-year increase of 19.68%.

Completed the demonstration and introduction of equipment such as 2 fully automatic paraffin embedding machines, 2 fully automatic paraffin microtome machines and 1 frozen microtome in the pathological diagnosis center.
