Anesthesiology Department

The Anesthesiology Department of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital is one of the birthplaces of the anesthesia profession in my country. The founder is Ms. Yao Zhangming, an American registered anesthesiologist. As early as 1946, when the hospital was first established, the position of anesthesiologist was established.

In 1963, Professor Wang Yuanchang took the lead in establishing an independent anesthesiology department in the country and trained anesthesiologists nationwide. He also became one of the founders of my country's anesthesia community as famous as Xie Rong and Wu Jue.

In addition, Professor Wang Yuanchang was the first in the world to successfully use transthoracic wall external cardiac compression to save a patient's life. The relevant article was published in the "Chinese Journal of Surgery" in 1957, three years earlier than the earliest recognized report by Kouwenhoven in 1960.

Subsequently, Professor Li Wenshuo devoted himself to the development of China's anesthesia higher education while building the department, and became one of the founders of China's anesthesia undergraduate education.

Since Professor Wang Guolin took charge of the work in 1997, the Department of Anesthesiology has developed rapidly and has become a secondary clinical discipline integrating medicine, teaching and research.

Obtained the master's degree authorization point in 1993 and the doctoral degree authorization point in 2006.

Currently, the Department of Anesthesiology is a key discipline of Tianjin Medical University and Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, a key discipline of Tianjin City, a key clinical discipline of Tianjin City, and is a listed unit of the Tianjin Anesthesiology Quality Control Center.

Academic leader Professor Wang Guolin currently serves as the vice president of the Anesthesia Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the vice chairman of the China Anesthesia Higher Education Council, and the deputy editor-in-chief of the Chinese Journal of Anesthesia. He is one of the recognized leaders in the Chinese anesthesiology community.

The Department of Anesthesiology of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital has strong technical force and has formed a comprehensive sub-specialty of anesthesia—clinical anesthesia, comfortable medical care outside the operating room, and pain diagnosis and treatment center.

It started pain diagnosis and treatment work in Tianjin earlier, and now a pain ward has been established.

More than 25,000 cases of clinical anesthesia are completed every year. The clinical medical features are positioned at anesthesia for difficult and critical patients, anesthesia for elderly patients, anesthesia for patients with complex intrathoracic tumors, anesthesia for complex neurosurgery patients, etc. Currently, six sub-specialties have been established: cardiovascular anesthesia, thoracic anesthesia, neurosurgical anesthesia, chronic pain diagnosis and treatment, outside operating anesthesia and other professional anesthesia. In the past three years, a number of new technologies have been developed and are at the leading level in the country.

The proportion of clinically critical cases in the total number of surgeries has always remained around 30%.

Strictly implement perioperative anesthesia quality control and management, and the anesthesia mortality rate has been less than 1/100,000 for 15 consecutive years, reaching the level of internationally advanced countries.

The Department of Anesthesiology attaches great importance to the training of professional and technical personnel and the construction of reserve talents. At present, the department has got rid of the dilemma of unreasonable personnel structure and initially has a reasonable structure of clinical, teaching and research personnel, which plays an important role in medical treatment, teaching and scientific research.

The department has always attached great importance to talent training and introduction, and currently has 55 clinicians, of whom 60% are young and middle-aged doctors under the age of 40, more than 95% of clinicians under the age of 45 have a master's degree, and more than 60% have a doctorate or doctorate degree.

Among the clinicians, 9 have senior professional titles, including 1 professor, 1 chief physician and professor, 7 chief physicians, and 14 with deputy senior professional titles.

Among the clinicians, 11 have long-term (more than 3 months) overseas study experience, and many doctors have studied in advanced domestic medical institutions.

The surgery center currently has more than 90 operating room nurses, 1 department nurse and 3 head nurses. The ratio of operating beds to nurses is 1:2.6.

At present, a reasonable personnel structure has basically been formed.

The undergraduate program has a strong teaching staff and undertakes theoretical teaching and clinical practice for undergraduate, master's and doctoral students in anesthesia, undergraduate medicine, seven-year program and foreign students.

It has trained more than 500 undergraduate students and more than 70 master's and doctoral students in the Department of Anesthesia. It focuses on cultivating scientific research and clinical abilities for graduate students, and has formed a standard for reporting work to the tutor group every week to facilitate tutors to guide the work of graduate students.

Pay attention to the cultivation of medical ethics and medical skills for interns, and improve their ideological and moral quality and ability to combine theory and practice. After graduation, many graduate students become leaders in the anesthesia discipline.

The Department of Anesthesiology has a high influence and reputation in the city and the country. There are more than 10 doctors, including subject leaders, working part-time in domestic or local academic groups and professional journals. The Department of Anesthesiology is the training base for anesthesia doctors in Tianjin. Many experts, including the former editor-in-chief of the Chinese Academy of Anesthesiology, have studied in the General Hospital.

In the past 10 years, it has trained nearly a hundred trainees for hospitals at all levels in many provinces and cities across the country. In the past three years, it has continuously held the "Tianjin Primary Hospital Department Director Training Course" and various training short courses every year, becoming an important training cradle for anesthesia professionals and management cadres in various primary hospitals.

The Department of Anesthesiology is a standardized training base for residents in Tianjin. It has recruited more than 60 residents and established a complete standardized training system for residents. It has also established a large-scale ICU simulation laboratory and HPS simulation training system in North China.

It is also the primary hospital training base of the Chinese Society of Anesthesiology, neurosurgical anesthesia, inhalation anesthesia, and comfort medical training base.

Scientific research in the anesthesiology department has made significant progress in recent years. The Tianjin Institute of Anesthesiology was established in 2013 and has established a complete basic research platform.

Scientific research has formed stable scientific research directions: basic and clinical research on pain, basic and clinical research on perioperative organ protection, basic and clinical research on severe sepsis, and research on the action mechanism and clinical application of anesthetic drugs.

Among them, the research results in related fields such as pain, perioperative organ protection and sepsis have reached the internationally advanced and domestic leading level.

In the past three years, it has undertaken more than 30 projects at the national, provincial, municipal, and school bureau levels, with a total scientific research funding of more than 10 million yuan, including 18 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 2 Tianjin Municipal Science and Technology Support Key Projects, 1 Tianjin Municipal Key Project, and 4 Tianjin Natural Science Fund projects.

He has won 2 second-class awards for Tianjin Science and Technology Progress, 3 third-class awards, and the second-class Science and Technology Award of the China Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine.

In the past three years, he has published more than 40 papers in SCI journals, among which the highest impact factor of a single article is 5.359, and a single article has been cited more than 200 times.

He is the editor-in-chief (translator) of 9 monographs, and academic leaders and backbones have been invited to participate in academic conferences such as the World Association of Anesthesiologists, the American Annual Society of Anesthesiologists, the European Annual Society of Anesthesiology, the German Annual Society of Anesthesiology, the Japanese Annual Society of Anesthesiology, the Korean Annual Society of Anesthesiology, and the National Anesthesiology Annual Conference of the Chinese Medical Association, and have delivered speeches at many conferences.

The Department of Anesthesiology has stable and extensive exchanges with the anesthesiology community at home and abroad.

It has established a long-term relationship with the Heart Center of the University of Tampere in Finland and has trained 4 clinical cardiac anesthesiologists. It has established talent training programs with overseas universities such as Imperial College London, University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany, Erasme Hospital of the Free University of Brussels in Belgium, Department of Anesthesiology at Singapore General Hospital, Harvard Medical School in the United States, and University of Florida School of Medicine in the United States. More than 10 people have studied abroad for a long time.

He has hosted more than 30 national and municipal continuing education classes and academic conferences in Tianjin. The teaching content covers perioperative safety and quality control, anesthesia and monitoring of critically ill patients, cardiopulmonary and cerebral resuscitation, minimally invasive pain treatment, scientific research design and paper writing, etc., which has played a role in promoting the development of anesthesia disciplines in the region.
