Tianjin Medical University General Hospital

The Department of Radiotherapy oncology of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital was established in the early days of the founding of New China. It has carried out radiotherapy for malignant tumors in China since 1950.

In 1983, Professor Yang Tianen served as the department director.

In June 1996, the department introduced Star-2000 stereotactic radiotherapy equipment and Varian600C linear accelerator (i.e. X-knife), and became the first in China to carry out stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) for intracranial, head and neck and body tumors.

Since Professor Cao Yongzhen became the director of the department in 2006, the radiotherapy ward was established with the strong support of the hospital leaders, and the development of the department has ushered in spring.

The current team includes more than 30 doctors, technicians, nurses, physicists, etc., and the department members have a complete professional composition.

In 2012, in order to meet the growing medical needs of patients and better provide patients with a superior modern medical environment, the department wards were moved to the new inpatient building, and the radiotherapy machine room was also moved to the newly built modern radiotherapy area with a total building area of about 1,000 square meters.

The number of professional beds in the modern ward has been increased to 42. The environment is clean and tidy, and various advanced and first-class medical equipment are in line with international standards. The new radiotherapy area is spacious and warm.

In 2013, it was the first to introduce Tianjin's first linear accelerator, the Kodak SynergyVMAT linear accelerator and the CT simulator Philips BrillianceCT BigBore, and was the first to carry out volumetric conformal intensity-modulated radiotherapy in Tianjin.

Since Zhang Wenxue took over the management of the radiotherapy department in 2016, he has placed more emphasis on specialization and multidisciplinary cooperation, expanded the types of radiotherapy diseases, and strengthened radiotherapy for digestive tract tumors and radiotherapy for benign diseases.

At present, multidisciplinary cooperation covers all oncology groups in the hospital, and extensive multidisciplinary exchanges and cooperation are also carried out with oncology groups in other hospitals outside the hospital. The clinical and scientific research status of the department has increased significantly.

In 2019, the department is about to introduce the Elekta Infinity linear accelerator, which enables real-time monitoring of the patient's tumor and normal organs during the treatment process, and adjusts the accelerator's aiming system according to changes in the position of the organs to make the rays closely "follow" the tumor target area, ensuring that the accuracy of irradiation of tumor-killing rays is doubled. This ensures that the tumor is fatally struck while normal organs can be greatly reduced in radiation exposure, reducing the occurrence of adverse reactions to radiotherapy.

The department is about to introduce the most advanced FlexitronHDR post-loading treatment machine, which can carry out post-loading treatment represented by cervical tumors and implanted radiotherapy for many superficial tumors. It will achieve the cumulative effect of the combined force of internal and external radiation, thereby achieving the goal of radical tumor cure.

The Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy of the General Hospital works together, adhering to the core values of the department of "realism, dedication, collaboration, and innovation", and continues to grow and prosper.

Relying on its rich clinical experience and solid theoretical foundation, and relying on the strong comprehensive strength of Tianjin's largest tertiary-level general hospital, the department combines neurology, facial features, chest, abdomen, gynecology, hematology and other disciplines to provide accurate, effective and safe radiotherapy for cancer patients, benefiting a large number of cancer patients across the country and greatly improving the quality of life and survival rate of cancer patients.

Since 1996, the department has trained more than 3,000 stereotactic radiotherapy physicians for more than 200 hospitals in China. Most of them have become the technical backbone of various units, and some have taken up leadership positions, making outstanding contributions to the healthy development of the field of stereotactic radiotherapy in my country.
