Pulmonary Tumor Surgery Department

The Department of Pulmonary Oncology of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital was founded in September 2006 by Professor Zhou Qinghua, a famous expert in thoracic surgery and oncology in my country. Relying on each other with the Tianjin Lung Cancer Research Institute, it has formed a specialty specialty that combines clinical and scientific research and provides comprehensive management and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer with a focus on surgery.

Under the leadership of Professor Zhou Qinghua and Professor Chen Jun as the subject leaders, through the construction of comprehensive investment in Tianjin's "11th Five-Year Plan and 12th Five-Year Plan", through joint applications and implementations such as the 11th Five-Year Plan to support lung cancer screening and early diagnosis through science and technology, Sino-Swedish cooperation in individualized diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, and "863" and "97" 3" Large-scale projects such as the molecular classification of lung cancer have gradually formed a clinical translational research system that pays equal attention to clinical and basic research, attracting many outstanding talents to join, thus establishing an academic team composed of lung cancer clinical and basic researchers and multi-disciplines, closely integrating clinical and scientific research.

In 2007, under the leadership of Professor Zhou Qinghua and Professor Chen Jun, the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital became a key discipline in Tianjin and was approved as the Tianjin Key Laboratory of Lung Cancer Metastasis and Tumor Microenvironment.

In 2008, the Department of Pulmonary Oncology of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital hosted the 8th China Academic Conference on Tumor Metastasis, and Professor Zhou Qinghua was elected as the Chairman of the Lung Cancer Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association.

In 2013, the team was selected as the 12th Five-Year Plan for the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Innovation Team of Tianjin Universities. In 2015, the Tianjin International Cooperation Center for Basic and Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer was established. In 2016, the team successfully applied for Tianjin Medical University's advantageous disciplines. In 2017, it was selected into Tianjin Talents Develop a high-level Tianjin lung cancer basic and clinical translation research innovation team under a special support plan. In 2018, it was re-selected into the 13th Five-Year Plan for Tianjin University Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery Innovation Team and the Tianjin Innovation Talent Promotion Plan Key Area Lung Cancer Basic and Clinical Translation Research Innovation Team.

During this period, Professor Zhou Qinghua was elected as the chairman of the Tumor Metastasis Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association in 2015 and established the Lung Nodule Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, which was led by lung oncology surgery and participated by multiple disciplines. In 2016, the lung oncology surgery department of the General Hospital hosted the first Tianjin Lung Cancer Comprehensive Diagnosis and Treatment Forum, and established and launched the Tianjin Lung Cancer MDT Academic Salon for Young and Middle-aged Physicians.

The lung tumor surgery department currently has 18 doctors and 26 nurses on staff.

Among them, there is one first-level talent in Tianjin’s “131” innovative talent training project, one talent each in Tianjin’s Jinmen Talents and Jinmen Medical Emerging Talents, and one second-level talent in Tianjin’s “131” innovative talent training project.

The team members are mainly young and middle-aged people around 45 years old, with an average age of 40 years old. The main members have long-term study experience abroad. They have hosted national and provincial key scientific research projects for many times, published high-level scientific research articles and served in national academic institutions.

Professor Chen Jun, the administrative director of the department, currently serves as the deputy director of the Lung Cancer Prevention and Control Branch of the Chinese Association for the Promotion of Medical Sciences, the youth committee member of the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the lung cancer group member of the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the member of the Thoracic Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the Standing Committee of the Thoracic Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Promotion Association, the Biotherapeutics Professional Standing Committee of the Chinese Association of Research Hospitals, and the tumor metastasis branch member of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Society.

Professor Chen Jun is also a member of the Lung Cancer Special Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Society, the deputy director of the Translational Medicine Branch of the Chinese Physicians Association of the European and American Alumni Association, a member of the Thoracic Surgery Committee of the Cross-Strait Medical and Health Exchange Association, a standing committee member of the Tobacco Control and Lung Cancer Prevention Committee of the Chinese Association for Smoking Control, a director of the Thoracic Surgery Endoscopy and Minimally Invasive Committee of the Endoscopist Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctors Association, a director of the Tianjin Society of Cell Biology, a member of the American Association of Clinical Oncology, and a member of the American Association for Cancer Research. Member, deputy editor-in-chief of "Chinese Journal of Lung Cancer", editorial board member of "ThoracicCancer".

The Department of Pulmonary Oncology Surgery currently has 78 inpatient beds open, with an annual discharge of nearly 3,000 patients, nearly 20,000 outpatient visits, and more than 1,000 lung operations annually, of which more than 70% are minimally invasive surgeries. The department is divided into two subspecialties: locally advanced lung cancer and minimally invasive thoracic surgery. It is an important comprehensive diagnosis and treatment center for lung tumors in North China.

The outstanding feature of this discipline is that it has a certain leading position in the country in terms of full surgical management and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of locally advanced lung cancer. It is domestically unique in early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. It is also at the forefront of research at home and abroad on the invasion and metastasis of lung cancer, tumor microenvironment, and drug resistance reversal.

The team took the lead in carrying out lung cancer resection combined with superior vena cava resection, artificial blood vessel replacement and reconstruction, partial atrium resection, carina resection and reconstruction, radical resection of lung cancer and partial atrium resection under cardiopulmonary bypass, and double sleeve bronchoplasty and pulmonary artery surgery at Tianjin Medical University General Hospital. These surgeries have filled gaps in Tianjin, improved the overall level and academic status of Tianjin Medical University's Thoracic Surgery Department, and have had a good influence across the country and have great social benefits.

On the basis of inheriting advantageous projects, the team focuses on minimally invasive surgery for early diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary nodules, such as lobectomy, sleeve lobectomy, precision segmentectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection, so that patients can achieve rapid recovery and long-term survival with minimal trauma.

At the same time, the team has outstanding features in the diagnosis and treatment of mediastinal tumors, including the resection of huge types of mediastinal tumors and the reconstruction of adjacent large blood vessels, as well as minimally invasive surgical treatment of suitable mediastinal tumors.
