Ophthalmology Department

The Department of Ophthalmology of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital is the birthplace of modern ophthalmology in China and has a glorious history. Since its establishment in December 1946, the scale of the discipline has been continuously expanded through the unremitting efforts of Chinese ophthalmology pioneers represented by Yuan Jiaqin and contemporary ophthalmologists of the General Hospital.

The department adheres to the concept of "go out and invite in" and has sent key personnel to Qingdao Eye Institute, Zhongshan Ophthalmology Center of Sun Yat-sen University, Peking University First Hospital, Peking University Third Hospital, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and BascomPa of the University of Miami in the United States. Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University Wilmer Eye Institute, Harvard Medical School Eye and Ear Hospital, Medical University of California, and the Toxicology Research Center of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and regularly invite internationally renowned scholars in the field of ophthalmology to give lectures at the hospital.

At present, the number of discipline members has increased to 44, including 25 doctors, 15 nurses, 4 technicians, 14 people with senior professional titles, 1 doctoral supervisor, and 5 master supervisors.

The number of beds has increased to 48, and seven sub-specialties including vitreoretinal diseases and ocular trauma, cataracts and glaucoma, refraction and ocular surface diseases, strabismus and pediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastic surgery, orbital diseases and tear organ diseases, and uveal diseases have developed rapidly. The annual outpatient volume reaches more than 74,000 people, and the annual surgical volume reaches more than 4,500 cases.

The Department of Ophthalmology has won the honorary title of "Top Ten Departments" of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital for five consecutive years from 2014 to 2018. The Party Branch of Ophthalmology has won the title of "Advanced Grassroots Party Organization of Tianjin Medical University" many times. In 2018, it won the title of "Red Flag Party Organization of Tianjin Medical University". The Ophthalmology League Branch won the title of "May 4th Red Flag League Branch".

At present, ophthalmology has entered the fast lane of development.

The discipline has successively become a key discipline of the Tianjin Municipal Education Commission, a key clinical specialty of Tianjin Medical University, a key discipline of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, the leader unit of the Ocular Traumatology Group of the Chinese Medical Association’s Ophthalmology Branch, the National Low Vision Rehabilitation Technology Guidance Center, and the home unit of the Visual Disability Rehabilitation Professional Committee of the Chinese Disabled Persons Rehabilitation Association.

In 2015, the discipline ranked among the top 20 ophthalmology departments in China's hospital science and technology influence rankings, ranking fifteenth and first in Tianjin.

Professor Yan Hua, the subject leader, currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Ocular Trauma Society, a member of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, an expert member of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the leader of the Ocular Traumatology Group of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, an executive director of the Board of Directors of the China Disabled Persons Rehabilitation Association, and the chairman of the Visual Disability Rehabilitation Professional Committee of the Chinese Disabled Persons Rehabilitation Association.

Professor Yan Hua is also the standing committee member of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association’s Ophthalmologist Branch, the chairman of the Ocular Trauma Special Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association’s Ophthalmologist Branch, the deputy chairman of the Ophthalmology and Optometry Medicine Branch of the Ministry of Education’s College Teaching Steering Committee, the deputy chairman of the Tianjin Medical Association’s Ophthalmology Branch, the executive director of the Chinese Hospital Association, the vice president of the Tianjin Hospital Association, the second review judge of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the review member of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the chief expert on visual disability in the Macao Special Administrative Region.

Thirteen technical backbones of the discipline also serve in national and academic institutions at all levels.

The ophthalmology department has a strong academic atmosphere. It has hosted many academic conferences such as the National Ocular Trauma Annual Conference, Tianjin Annual Ophthalmology Conference, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital GX Summit, etc., and it also hosts national-level continuing medical education ophthalmology clinical study classes and other academic activities every year.

He has published more than 210 papers, 41 of which are included in SCI, and he has edited or co-edited 21 monographs.

Professor Yan Hua was invited as the editor-in-chief by the internationally renowned scientific and technological publishing group Springer. The English version of the series of eye trauma books published globally has filled the gap in my country. This is the first series of eye trauma monographs in the world, and it is also a series of eye trauma monographs edited by a Chinese.

The Ophthalmology Teaching and Research Office has long been responsible for teaching ophthalmology for the seven-year clinical medicine program of Tianjin Medical University Basic Medical College, professional master's degree students in ophthalmology of the Graduate School, general practitioners, and Tianjin Medical University International Medical College.

As an outstanding teaching team of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, the ophthalmology English course won the Tianjin Municipal Brand English Course for Studying in China, the ophthalmology bilingual course won the Tianjin Medical University Excellent Course, and won the second prize of the Tianjin Municipal Teaching Achievement Award.

It is a "national standardized training base for residents" and dozens of trainees have completed the training and returned to work in their original units.

The Department of Ophthalmology is also a "cataract surgery training base" and an "excellent cataract surgery skills training base", and has trained outstanding young key doctors from all over the country.
