General Surgery Department

Tianjin Medical University General Hospital

As an important component of general surgery, the General Surgery Department of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital is a professional department established at the same time as the hospital. It has gradually grown and developed under the continuous efforts of Professors Wu Yingkai, Yu Songting, Wu Xianzhong, Liu Zikuan and other seniors. It has provided many talent supports for the construction of hospitals in Tianjin and even the country. It has a high influence in Tianjin and the Three North Region, and many majors are at the advanced level in the country and the leading level in Tianjin.

In 1986, the Department of General Surgery became an independent clinical department, with previous department directors including Professor Wang Pengzhi, Professor Zhu Liwei, Professor Liu Tong and Professor Zhang Zhixiang.

The discipline is a doctoral and master's degree awarding point and a postdoctoral mobile station in two disciplines: general surgery and integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine. The integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine is a national key discipline, a "top priority" construction discipline in Tianjin and a key discipline in the "211 Project" construction. General surgery is a national key clinical specialty.

The General Surgery Department currently has 6 sub-specialty wards with 234 beds. The annual number of discharged patients and operations have reached more than 6,000, and the number of outpatient and emergency visits has exceeded 120,000.

In 2012, with the joint efforts of general surgeons, the department broke through the competition among the top five general surgeries in Tianjin. It completed the summary and writing of the application with high quality, successfully applied for the national general surgery key clinical specialty project, and became the only national general surgery key clinical specialty in Tianjin. It received national funding and hospital matching funds of 10 million yuan, injecting new vitality into the development of the discipline, and the clinical technology level of general surgery once again made a new leap.

In 2014, general surgery was divided into subspecialties on a ward-by-ward basis, forming subspecialty directions such as gastrointestinal anorectal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic and spleen, nail, breast and abdominal wall, and vascular surgery.

After several years of unremitting efforts, laparoscopic surgery in general surgery has become routine for gastrointestinal tumor radical resection, liver resection, splenectomy, and hernioplasty. Recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring during thyroid surgery, treatment of complex intra-abdominal infections, and complex endovascular surgical treatment are in the ascendant.

The general surgical medical and technical research talent structure is reasonable, with 70 doctors and 4 research and technical staff.

Among clinicians, young and middle-aged doctors under the age of 40 account for nearly 40%.

Among the clinicians, there are 18 senior professional titles (12 professors), 29 deputy senior professional titles, 8 doctoral supervisors (Wu Xianzhong, Wang Pengzhi, Zhu Liwei, You Shengyi, Liu Tong, Wang Hao, He Xianghui, Qi Feng), and 9 master's degree supervisors (Zhang Zhixiang, Tian Weijun, Luo Yudong, Li Weidong, He Xiaoling, Ma Tao, Fu Weihua, Dai Xiangchen, Liu Gang).

Nearly 60% of clinical and scientific researchers have obtained a doctorate or are currently studying for a doctorate, and nearly 20 clinicians have long-term study abroad experience.

At the same time, the department and related majors have built a long-term, fixed clinical academic and technical platform, enriching the connotation of specialty construction.
