The Gastroenterology Department of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital was officially established in 1986.

After years of development, gastroenterology is now a key discipline at the school level of Tianjin Medical University, a doctoral program in digestive diseases at Tianjin Medical University, a key clinical discipline in Tianjin’s “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan”, the fourth batch of international science and technology cooperation bases in Tianjin, and the first batch of national key clinical specialties by the Ministry of Health. In 2015, the Tianjin Institute of Digestive Diseases was officially established.

After nearly 70 years of construction by many predecessors and colleagues, gastroenterology has now become a modern discipline in China with advanced equipment and strong technical force. National experts in digestion and digestive endoscopy such as Zhang Chengda, Huang Xiangqian, Huang Naixia, Li Hanrui, Wu Lin, Du Baoheng, Wang Xulin, Wang Bangmao, Liu Wentian, Lu Zongshun, Zhang Qingyu and Yang Yulong have emerged. The medical level and academic status of the discipline have great influence in Tianjin and even the country.

After several generations of hard work and exploration in the Department of Gastroenterology, the discipline currently has distinctive features in the following aspects:

①Early diagnosis and treatment of digestive system tumors.

②Diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to digestive system motility.

③Diagnosis and treatment of immune-related diseases of the digestive system.

④Research on new technologies for digestive endoscopy diagnosis and treatment.

Currently, the Department of Gastroenterology has an annual outpatient volume of nearly 200,000. The clinical base has 152 beds and treats more than 3,600 patients annually. The bed utilization rate exceeds 100%.

The digestive endoscopy center covers an area of ​​nearly 1,000 square meters. It currently has all digestive endoscopy diagnostic and treatment equipment such as gastroscopy, enteroscopy, duodenoscopy, double-balloon enteroscopy, blue laser combined with magnifying endoscopy, ultrasonic endoscopy, dual-channel therapeutic endoscopy and smart capsule gastrointestinal endoscopy. It can carry out 17 endoscopy examinations at the same time, and diagnose and treat 50,000 people annually.

The Department of Gastroenterology has undertaken dozens of fund projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Health and Family Planning Commission’s Key Clinical Specialty Construction Project Fund, the Ministry of Education Fund, and the Tianjin Municipal Fund, with a total scientific research funding of more than 30 million yuan.

At present, the independent laboratory affiliated to the Department of Gastroenterology has a construction area of ​​more than 500 square meters and is equipped with experimental equipment worth more than 10 million yuan.

He has published more than 700 papers, edited or co-edited more than 10 academic monographs, and applied for more than 10 national patents.

Under the leadership of the department director, Professor Wang Bangmao, the Department of Gastroenterology currently has 48 physicians, including 15 with senior professional titles, 7 with deputy senior professional titles, 15 attending physicians, and 11 resident physicians.

There are 29 doctors, 17 masters, 5 doctoral supervisors, and 9 master supervisors.

There are 41 undergraduate nurses, including 24 intermediate nurses, 17 junior nurses, and 6 junior rotation nurses.

In 2015, Airport Hospital and Binhai Hospital became members of the General Hospital Medical Consortium, and both have independent digestive and digestive endoscopy work units.

At present, the Department of Gastroenterology has developed into a digestive specialty with strong comprehensive capabilities in the diagnosis and treatment of digestive diseases in Tianjin, a wide coverage, a concentration of outstanding talents, and strong technical force.
