Traumatology Department

Xiyuan Hospital, Chinese Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences

The Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology is a key department of Xiyuan Hospital. The construction of the department began in 1977 and has now developed into a comprehensive department of Orthopedics and Traumatology that integrates medical teaching and research and combines traditional Chinese and Western medicine as its advantageous diagnosis and treatment features.

Generations of Xiyuan Bone Traumatologists have always strived to integrate the essence of traditional Chinese medicine into modern medical diagnosis and treatment technology, continuously develop and enrich the unique diagnosis and treatment connotation of the Orthopedics Department of Xiyuan Hospital, and adhere to the principles of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine bone trauma diagnosis and treatment principles of combining movement and stillness, paying equal attention to muscles and bones, treating both internal and external diseases, and doctor-patient cooperation.

The orthopedic and traumatology medical team is also good at inheriting traditional Chinese medicine bone-setting techniques and exquisite surgical techniques. It provides multi-angle, individualized, step-by-step comprehensive high-quality medical services for the vast number of patients with neck, shoulder, waist and leg pain, limb fractures and degenerative bone and joint diseases. It is at the domestic advanced level in the diagnosis and treatment of joint, spinal diseases and bone metabolism diseases with integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine.

The department currently has 35 medical staff, including 7 with senior professional titles, and has an annual outpatient volume of nearly 100,000.

The Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology of Xiyuan Hospital is the chairman unit of the Spinal Injuries and Injuries Expert Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association Branch of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, and a member unit of the Geriatric Spine and Joint Committee of the Chinese Geriatrics Society.

The current scope of clinical diagnosis and treatment includes:

1. Osteoporotic vertebral fractures in the elderly: In 2006, the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology of Xiyuan Hospital carried out minimally invasive percutaneous vertebroplasty surgery, cervical, thorax and lumbar decompression and internal fixation surgeries for elderly osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Now, the average annual number of vertebral compression fracture surgeries in our hospital exceeds 300. This helps patients achieve rapid recovery in a short period of time, get off the ground as soon as possible, and avoid complications such as bedsores and aggravation of basic cardiopulmonary diseases caused by long-term bed rest.

2. Fractures of limbs: For fractures of limbs, the treatment carried out by the department includes manual bone reduction combined with splinting, plaster external fixation, minimally invasive and incisional internal fixation surgery, limb reconstruction surgery, etc.

During the fracture recovery period, Xiyuan's characteristic traditional Chinese medicine is used to promote fracture healing and functional recovery.

3. Osteoarthritis of joints such as hips, knees, ankles, and shoulders: According to the different stages of joint disease development, we provide step-by-step treatment services: conservative treatment, arthroscopic minimally invasive technology, and various artificial joint replacement technologies.

The joint rehabilitation team applies multimodal analgesia combined with mature perioperative functional exercise guidance to help patients recover quickly.

4. Cervico-thoracic and lumbar degenerative diseases (disc herniation, spinal stenosis, etc.): We have developed mature and systematic diagnostic and treatment technical services including foraminal block, minimally invasive laser ablation, minimally invasive spinal endoscopic technology, open laminectomy, disc removal and internal fixation and fusion, and revision surgery after complex spinal internal fixation.

5. Joint sports injuries: For sports injuries of knees, hips, ankles, shoulders and other joints, such as knee meniscus injuries, cruciate ligament rupture, ankle joint instability, rotator cuff injuries, shoulder joint instability, etc., minimally invasive techniques such as arthroscopic lesion cleaning, meniscus suturing, rotator cuff repair, cruciate ligament reconstruction, and ankle ligament reconstruction have been carried out.

6. Chronic pain and rapid postoperative recovery: For chronic pain caused by soft tissue strain, degenerative bone and joint disease, and limb function recovery after orthopedic surgery, treatments such as local nerve block, small acupuncture, minimally invasive radiofrequency, manual release and adjustment, acupuncture, oral and external application of traditional Chinese medicine based on syndrome differentiation, traction, medium-frequency orthopedic treatment equipment, and individualized muscle training are carried out.

7. Treatment and rehabilitation of bone and soft tissue tumors: Surgery and perioperative comprehensive rehabilitation program integrating traditional Chinese and Western medicine are carried out for bone and soft tissue tumors of the limbs.

8. Orthopedics and Traumatology Honors:

In 2019, it was awarded the Orthopedic Surgery Accelerated Recovery Perioperative Blood and Pain Management Demonstration Ward created by the China Rehabilitation Technology Transformation and Development Promotion Association.
