TCM Surgery Department

Xiyuan Hospital, Chinese Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences

The Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine Surgery of Xiyuan Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences is a secondary discipline established when the hospital was founded. The department has a solid foundation in Traditional Chinese Medicine Surgery. After nearly 70 years of development, it has become a first-class domestic discipline of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine that has mastered modern surgical techniques and has strong characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine and has achieved fruitful results in medical treatment, teaching, and scientific research.

After 70 years of hard work, with the development of the discipline and the efforts of several generations of surgeons, general surgery has gradually been divided into anorectal surgery, urology surgery, vascular surgery and breast disease, making outstanding contributions to the establishment of other three-level disciplines.

The General Surgery Department currently has 2 chief physicians, 1 deputy chief physician, 5 attending physicians, 1 resident physician, 4 retired experts, and a 14-member nursing team.

The department has the world's most advanced high-end equipment such as 4K laparoscopy, high-definition laparoscopy, standard-definition laparoscopy, electronic choledochoscopy, and parathyroid imaging systems. It is the main department of our hospital's minimally invasive surgery platform and is the leader of the surgical group of the Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Physicians Branch of the Beijing Medical Association.

Over the past decades, while inheriting traditional Chinese medicine technology, we have continuously explored and innovated traditional Chinese medicine theories, and developed two in-hospital preparations, Shiwei Jinhuang Ointment and Money Grass Ointment, which have been clinically used for many years and have extremely high efficacy evaluations, benefiting surgical ulcer patients and gallstone patients.

Based on summarizing the experience of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of cholelithiasis, in recent years we have conducted in-depth research on the difficult areas of preventing stone recurrence after gallbladder preservation and stone removal, focusing on the application of traditional Chinese medicine and combining Chinese and Western medicine, which has become a domestic feature.

With the changes in surgical concepts and the development of technology, we continue to improve our surgical skills. Minimally invasive surgeries that can be performed under laparoscopy include: gallbladder and appendectomy surgeries;

Two-scope combined surgery for extrahepatic bile duct stones secondary to cholecystolithiasis;

Minimally invasive resection of some hepatopancreatic tumors;

Minimally invasive gallbladder-preserving lithotomy;

Minimally invasive radical surgery for gastrointestinal tumors;

Minimally invasive tension-free repair of abdominal wall hernia;

Precise radical surgery for thyroid cancer, etc.

At the same time, the Department of General Surgery (General Surgery) undertakes a number of projects of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences and the hospital, actively cooperates with domestic technology leaders in surgery and scientific research, and has achieved a number of research results, providing a theoretical basis for improving the level of clinical work.

Published many articles in domestic core journals and surgical-related works.

Our department also undertakes regular training work all year round, training hundreds of graduate students and regular trainees for Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and major traditional Chinese medicine schools.

In order to pursue specialization in the development of surgical technology, the general surgery (general surgery) ward currently consists of a hepatobiliary group, a gastrointestinal group, and a thyroid hernia group;

The outpatient clinic has specialized outpatient clinics for cholelithiasis, thyroid disease, and hernia disease. Patients are welcome to visit our department.

Our department has always adhered to the patient-centered service concept, emphasizing both Chinese and Western medicine, deeply cultivating scientific research, cultivating talents, and developing disciplines. It is our eternal pursuit to provide you with high-quality, efficient, and heart-warming services with enthusiasm and dedication.

Specialties of surgery:

Cholelithiasis Surgery:

Cholelithiasis is a common and frequently-occurring disease in abdominal surgery, and the trend among younger people is obvious.

At present, our department has a surgical gallstone-specific outpatient clinic, with an annual outpatient volume of approximately 9,000 patients.

The gallstone clinic provides corresponding individualized traditional Chinese medicine decoction treatment and life guidance according to different symptom types and stages of patients, so as to achieve the effects of dissolving and removing stones, stabilizing and delaying the disease before surgery, promoting recovery after surgery and preventing recurrence.

The professional liver and gallbladder team has stable personnel and superb skills, and provides services for patients requiring surgery based on the concepts of minimally invasive and rapid recovery.

For gallbladder stones, bile duct stones, recurrent cholelithiasis and complex cholelithiasis, laparoscopic minimally invasive cholecystectomy, two-scope combined (laparoscopic combined choledochoscope) minimally invasive chole-preserving stone removal, two-scope combined cholecystectomy and bile duct exploration and lithotomy can be performed.

It is part of our philosophy not to easily remove a well-functioning gallbladder.

Over the years, our department has continued to carry out a number of studies on gallstone diseases in view of the complexity of the causes of gallstones. We have carried out individualized treatment with traditional Chinese medicine decoctions for patients with gallstones and acute and chronic calculus cholecystitis all year round. We have inherited and carried forward the clinical experience of several generations of doctors. The number of patients who have experienced stone dissolution and expulsion has been expanding year by year.

Abdominal hernia and thyroid disease:

Hernia is a common and frequently-occurring disease in surgery, with many types, including inguinal hernia, femoral hernia, incisional hernia, umbilical hernia, etc., among which inguinal hernia is the most common.

Surgery is currently the only way to cure hernia disease in adults.

The hernia specialist relies on our hospital's advanced minimally invasive surgical technology and clinical management experience to carry out laparoscopic tension-free inguinal hernia repair and various conventional open hernia surgeries, which are less painful and require shorter hospital stays:

Minimally invasive-laparoscopic tension-free inguinal hernia repair: less painful, faster recovery, shorter hospital stay, and can detect hidden hernias at the same time. It is especially suitable for bilateral hernias and young patients who need to return to work as soon as possible.

Tension-free hernia repair surgery under open-local anesthesia nerve block: using local anesthesia technology, it is suitable for elderly patients with many underlying diseases who cannot tolerate general anesthesia.

Thyroid diseases mainly include thyroid tumors, goiter, thyroiditis, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.

After years of development, the Thyroid Specialist Department has accumulated rich experience in treating thyroid diseases using the combination of traditional Chinese and Western medicine.

Based on the patient's specific condition, an individualized plan can be formulated and surgery or traditional Chinese medicine can solve the problem for most patients with thyroid disease.

At present, thyroid fine-needle aspiration biopsy, combined with color ultrasound, genetic testing and other examination methods, can greatly improve the preoperative diagnosis rate of thyroid cancer and avoid unnecessary surgery to the greatest extent.

For patients diagnosed with thyroid tumors who require surgery, various thyroid surgeries, intraoperative parathyroid exploration, etc. can be performed, with small neck incisions and quick recovery.

Postoperative treatment combined with traditional Chinese medicine can effectively promote patient recovery and reduce complications.

In addition, our department has rich experience in applying traditional Chinese medicine to treat thyroiditis, especially Hashimoto's thyroiditis and subacute thyroiditis, which can effectively alleviate clinical symptoms.

It is our continuous pursuit to explore the use of traditional Chinese medicine to control or treat diseases such as thyroid tumors and nodular goiter, and to find a non-surgical method to provide more choices and help for these patients.
