Oncology Department

The Oncology Department of Guang'anmen Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, was established in 1963. It is a national-level professional department of traditional Chinese medicine and integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine oncology that integrates medicine, teaching and research. It enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad.

The department is currently a national regional TCM cancer diagnosis and treatment center, an innovation team in the key areas of the Ministry of Science and Technology’s “TCM Cancer Reinforcement and Training”, a key discipline, key specialty, key research laboratory, and a third-level tumor molecular biology laboratory of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine;

At the same time, it is the chairman unit of the International Alliance of Traditional Chinese Medicine on Cancer and the China Alliance of Traditional Chinese Medicine on Cancer Prevention and Treatment, and is an affiliated unit of academic groups such as the Oncology Branch of the Chinese Society of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Oncology Professional Committee of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, and the Oncology Drug Research Professional Committee of the China Traditional Chinese Medicine Association.

It has also been identified as the leading unit of the Cancer Key Specialty Alliance for the coordinated development of traditional Chinese medicine in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, a core specialty in Beijing’s National Key Specialty of Traditional Chinese Medicine Radiation Project (1+X+N) Capital, a remote consultation center in Beijing, and a three-excellent teaching team for the standardized training of traditional Chinese medicine residents in Beijing.

The oncology ward has 200 open beds and is also responsible for the health care tasks of central cadres. It has an annual outpatient volume of more than 250,000 and discharges more than 3,500 people annually.

Traditional Chinese medicine treatment methods such as traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage, rehabilitation training, and external treatment are mainly used, supplemented by modern treatment methods such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, interventional therapy, argon-helium knife, and radiofrequency ablation, which can significantly improve clinical efficacy, improve quality of life, and prolong survival time.

As a clinical trial institution for cancer drugs under the State Food and Drug Administration, it has successively carried out clinical trial projects for 43 new cancer drugs.

It has independently developed more than ten kinds of specialty preparations such as Xihuang Jiedu Capsules, Feiyuping Ointment, Fuzheng Jiedu Oral Liquid, Jianpi Yishen Granules, and Ruanjian Xiaoliu Tablets.

The department was the first in the country to carry out research on the principles of cancer treatment, and relied on industry associations to take the lead in formulating the diagnosis and treatment standards for 10 common malignant tumors such as lung cancer, gastric cancer, liver cancer, and breast cancer, as well as the "WHO Western Pacific Region Traditional Chinese Medicine Evidence-Based Medicine Clinical Guidelines for Cancer (Lung Cancer)."

Organized Chinese medicine experts across the country to formulate the country's first "Clinical Guidelines for the Treatment of Cancer with Traditional Chinese Medicine", which was translated into English and promoted at home and abroad, filling the gaps at home and abroad.

He has successively undertaken national-level projects such as the National Science and Technology Support Plan from the Sixth Five-Year Plan to the Twelfth Five-Year Plan and the National Natural Science Foundation. In the past five years, he has added and presided over 30 scientific research projects at the provincial and ministerial levels and above (including 21 national-level projects), and obtained 5 invention patents;

He has published more than 300 papers in core academic journals at home and abroad, including more than 40 SCI papers, and published more than 20 monographs.

He has won 2 second-class National Science and Technology Progress Awards, 3 first-class Science and Technology Awards from the China Society of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 3 first-class Science and Technology Awards from the China Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine.

It has won honorary titles such as "National Advanced Collective of Health System" and "Youth Civilization Award" of the Communist Youth League Central Committee.

The Department of Oncology is one of the first batch of master's and doctoral teaching units and postdoctoral mobile stations approved by the National Education Commission. It has 1 nationally renowned TCM doctor, 2 famous TCM teachers in the capital, 2 famous young and middle-aged TCM doctors loved by the people in the capital, 2 national TCM clinical talents, and outstanding talents from the National Health and Family Planning Commission. It has contributed many outstanding talents such as young and middle-aged experts and Beijing science and technology stars, including 8 doctoral supervisors and 14 master's degree supervisors. It has established 4 famous doctor workstations (rooms), has trained more than 100 master's and doctoral students, and more than 30 postdoctoral students, and participated in the compilation of the national TCM oncology postgraduate textbook.

It has successively established cooperative relationships with clinical research institutions in the United States, Australia, South Korea, Singapore and other countries.

Since 2007, it has established stable cooperation with the National Cancer Center (NCI), Mayo Medical Center, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Both parties have carried out clinical and basic research and jointly trained more than 10 doctoral (post-doctoral) students.

The Department of Oncology will focus on improving the clinical efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine in the prevention and treatment of tumors, strengthen scientific research, give full play to its unique advantages, and provide high-quality services to patients.
