Pathology Department
Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University
The Pathology Department of Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Capital Medical University is located in a two-story brick-red building with an attic. It stands elegantly and quietly in the West Campus of Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital at the foot of the Imperial City.
The Department of Pathology of Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital was officially established in 1978. Under the leadership of Professor Li Baozhu, Professor Zhu Li, Professor Yin Zhehong (currently the president of Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital), and Professor Jin Yulan, through the unremitting efforts of generations of obstetrics and gynecology pathologists, the department has continued to grow and develop. Now it has ushered in new development opportunities and has become an important clinical medical technology department that integrates medicine, teaching and research.
Currently, the Department of Pathology of Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital is a member of the Clinical Pathology Center of Capital Medical University, a training base for postgraduate students of Capital Medical University, a presiding unit of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Specialty Alliance for Women and Children’s Health Care - Pathological Diagnosis of Difficult Diseases Sub-alliance, and a technical training base for cervical cancer prevention and control grassroots personnel training projects.
The department now has 31 employees, including 14 physicians, 13 technicians, 2 auxiliary doctors, and 2 master's students.
Among them, there are 2 chief physicians, 3 deputy chief physicians, and 1 deputy chief technician.
In recent years, a large number of outstanding talents have been introduced, and the proportion of highly educated medical technicians has increased significantly. Currently, there are 7 doctors and 8 masters, including 1 doctor and 2 masters in the technical team.
The Department of Pathology undertakes tasks such as clinical pathological diagnosis of female reproductive system diseases, breast diseases, cytology and molecular pathology, and fetal and infant autopsy pathological diagnosis, and has accumulated rich clinical experience.
Female reproductive system diseases, breast diseases and cervical exfoliative cytological lesions are complex and include a variety of common and rare diseases, which are very distinctive.
Currently, the department performs more than 40,000 external examinations per year, more than 70,000 cervical exfoliative cytology cases, and more than 5,000 intraoperative frozen cases.
As one of the national pathology consultation centers, the department undertakes pathology consultations from all over the country, with the number of consultations reaching more than 4,000 cases and increasing year by year.
The hospital strongly supports the development of the department and has equipped the pathology department with modern basic pathology equipment, which has greatly improved work efficiency. The laboratory fresh air system and central air conditioning have greatly improved the working environment. High-throughput scanners and tissue microarrays have provided guarantees for scientific research and teaching.
While developing conventional pathology techniques, we continue to improve the application of immunohistochemistry, special staining, and molecular biology techniques in pathological diagnosis, which strongly supports clinical pathology diagnosis and scientific research.
Cervical exfoliative cytology has introduced two modes: membrane type and sedimentation type, and has been the first in China to develop DNA ploidy-assisted cervical exfoliative cytology and cytology P16/KI67 double staining technology.
In terms of molecular pathology, testing projects such as FISH testing, cervical methylation testing, HPV (HPVE6/E7mRNA and 17 HPV types) testing, mole STR molecular typing and embryonic chromosome MLPA have been carried out. Molecular technology platforms such as HPV in situ hybridization, tumor gene PCR detection and second-generation sequencing will soon be put into use.
Since the outbreak of the COVID-19, the Molecular Pathology PCR Laboratory of the Department of Pathology has been on the frontline of the fight against the epidemic, completing the task of nucleic acid testing for the novel coronavirus with high quality and quantity.
The Department of Pathology is responsible for the theoretical teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students at Capital Medical University, the training of cervical histology and cytology for grassroots staff in cervical cancer prevention and control, and the quality control of cytology and histology for two cancer screenings in Beijing.
It accepts advanced students in obstetrics and gynecology pathology all year round and is taught by teachers above the associate senior level.
It hosts or co-organizes national and Beijing-level academic exchange conferences on obstetrics and gynecology many times every year, and the department regularly conducts business studies to improve its profession.
He has carried out research on cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine mesenchymal tumors, gestational trophoblastic disease, cervical exfoliative cytology, AI and pathological diagnosis, and research on mechanisms related to placenta and reproduction. He has chaired and participated in many national, provincial, ministerial, municipal and bureau-level and intra-hospital projects.
Some experts from the department serve as chairman, deputy chairman, standing committee member, committee member and youth committee member in various academic groups at home and abroad. They serve as editorial board members or review experts for many core journals such as "Chinese Journal of Pathology", "Chinese Medical Journal", "Chinese Journal of Clinicians", "Journal of Diagnostic Pathology" and so on.
Participated in the writing of some chapters of the 2020 WHO new classification of tumors of the female reproductive system (fifth edition), edited the Capital Medical University pathology textbook "Experimental Tutorial on Abnormal Human Morphology (2nd Edition)" (published in 2023), and translated the book "Intraoperative Frozen Diagnosis of Obstetric and Gynecological Pathology" (Int. raoperative Frozen Section Diagnosis in Gynecologic Pathology) will be published in 2024, and the monograph "Cervical Histology and Cytology" is being written and planned to be published in 2025.
In the future, the Department of Pathology will be committed to building a domestic high-level pathological diagnosis and scientific teaching and research base, focusing on the construction of molecular pathology laboratories, network difficult pathology consultation platforms, remote frozen consultation platforms, etc., and strive to become a domestic first-class and internationally advanced pathological diagnosis center for maternal and child specialties to protect women's health.
