The Endocrinology Department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University, under the leadership of Professor Wang Guang and Professor Xu Yuan, has gradually established a medical team with superb medical skills, leading scientific research, excellent teaching, reputation and distinctive features in recent years.

The professional medical level attracts a large number of local and out-of-town patients to come here for treatment, and the number of outpatient clinics ranks second among Beijing's top tertiary hospitals all year round.

As a doctoral training site for endocrinology and metabolic diseases at Capital Medical University, it currently has 1 doctoral supervisor and 3 master's supervisors, and can train doctoral students with professional/scientific degrees in endocrinology, master's students, 8-year graduate students, and master's students in general medicine.

The department has gradually established a reasonable and complete echelon of professional and technical talents. Currently, there are 41 medical staff, including 27 doctors, including 5 chief physicians, 10 deputy chief physicians, 22 doctors and 4 masters.

There are 14 people in the nursing team, 3 of whom are responsible nurses.

The subject leader of the department serves as a committee member of the Endocrinology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the Endocrinology and Metabolism Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and the deputy director of the Endocrinology Branch of the Beijing Medical Association.

The department currently has 21 beds and treats more than 100 inpatients every month. The disease diagnosis and treatment scope includes diabetes, dyslipidemia, osteoporosis, thyroid disease, parathyroid disease, pituitary gland, adrenal gland disease and other common and difficult endocrine diseases.

The department opens professional outpatient clinics all day long from Monday to Sunday, 365 days a year, with an average daily outpatient volume of more than 600 patients.

At the same time, specialized clinics for thyroid, blood lipid metabolism, obesity, osteoporosis and diabetes consultation are also opened.

Beijing Chaoyang Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University has an endocrine function laboratory and a molecular biology laboratory, which can complete most laboratory tests for endocrine and metabolic diseases such as diabetes, thyroid, pituitary gland, and adrenal gland.

In recent years, the department has developed rapidly in clinical research on endocrine diseases, and has successively won 10 National Natural Science Foundation projects, the Capital Clinical Specialty Fund, and 5 Beijing Natural Science Foundation projects.

The main research directions are thyroid disease, diabetes, abnormal blood lipid metabolism, osteoporosis, etc.

The results were published in authoritative international endocrinology journals such as NatureMedicine, JCEM, and Metabolism.

Department features

Diabetes, thyroid disease, osteoporosis, hyperlipidemia, adrenal disease, pituitary disease, obesity

(1) Diabetes:

The Endocrinology Department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital adheres to the diabetes treatment concept of "comprehensive, individualized, equal emphasis on prevention and treatment, and balance of lifestyle intervention and drug treatment" for patients with diabetes.

Taking advantage of the "diabetes education base", both outpatient clinics and wards are equipped with professional diabetes nurses. Through targeted teaching by medical staff, individual consultations, regular lectures, patient gatherings and other activities, all-round education and management of diabetic patients from life to treatment can be used to control the blood sugar of diabetic patients at a better level.

In addition, the department also carries out rapid blood glucose testing, rapid glycosylated hemoglobin testing and standardized insulin injection education in the outpatient clinic to facilitate patients.

(2)Thyroid disease:

Diagnosis and treatment of various thyroid diseases is our clinical advantage. We published one of the earliest research papers on abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism in patients with hypothyroidism and induced cardiovascular damage in the world. The relevant research was funded by the Yangfan Program, a key expert on thyroid diseases of the Beijing Municipal Hospital Authority.

The department has established a systematic, standardized, staged and orderly treatment model, which enables most patients with hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, subacute thyroiditis and other patients to achieve satisfactory results.

Especially for the currently high incidence of thyroid disease in pregnancy, the department conducts careful screening and strict tracking to ensure the safety of patients during pregnancy and the healthy development of the fetus.

For patients with thyroid nodules, we have established a collaborative relationship with the head and neck surgery department, isotope department, radiology department, and B-ultrasound room to implement individualized, all-round, targeted management, and take timely and feasible treatment measures.

(3) Osteoporosis:

Osteoporosis affects almost all middle-aged and elderly people, especially postmenopausal women. Many other diseases and drugs can also cause secondary osteoporosis, causing bone pain in multiple locations and multiple fractures, seriously affecting the quality of life.

A series of examinations such as vitamin D, bone metabolism indicators, and bone density can detect osteoporosis early and evaluate the effect of treatment.

The prevention and treatment of osteoporosis is not just through calcium and vitamin D supplementation, but requires long-term, comprehensive and multi-channel reasonable treatment to achieve good results.

The department's osteoporosis clinic will identify the cause of the disease through various strict examinations and conduct regular osteoporosis health education to achieve targeted and reasonable prevention and treatment.

Relevant research results were published in the most authoritative international endocrinology journals.

(4) Abnormal blood lipid metabolism:

The Endocrinology Department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital is in a leading position in the country in the field of blood lipid research, especially the mechanism of vascular damage induced by dyslipidemia in diabetes and its clinical treatment.

In recent years, it has obtained a number of national-level blood lipid research special projects, respectively exploring the clinical effects and cardiovascular protective mechanisms of statin and fibrate treatment on hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia. The research results have been published in international professional journals in the field of endocrinology many times, and it has accumulated rich experience.

In accordance with the "China Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes" and the "Chinese Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Dyslipidemia in Adults", a reasonable treatment plan is formulated according to the specific conditions of each patient, and specific guidance is provided on comprehensive lifestyle improvements in terms of diet, exercise, daily life, etc. In addition, while lipid-lowering treatment, more attention is paid to the benefits other than lipid-lowering, and the cardiovascular protective effects of drugs in addition to lipid-lowering are explored. Not only can the patient meet the standards for various blood lipid tests, but also benefit from many aspects in preventing atherosclerotic diseases, and ultimately achieve good results.

(5) Adrenal gland disease:

The prevalence of hypertension is increasing year by year, but 5% to 10% of it is caused by secondary factors. If the cause can be detected in time and effectively removed or controlled, secondary hypertension may be cured or significantly alleviated.

Primary aldosteronism is one of the most common causes of secondary hypertension. If not detected and treated in time, the risk of cardiovascular disease and renal damage in such patients is even greater than that of patients with primary hypertension.

In recent years, the department has successively carried out screening, diagnosis and treatment of adrenal diseases. In addition to primary aldosteronism, it also includes Cushing's syndrome, adrenocortical cancer, pheochromocytoma and some rare and difficult adrenal diseases. It has established a standardized diagnosis and treatment process, and has successively included such patients in the "China Adrenal Disease Registration Network" for management.

At the same time, the Urology Department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University has a highly skilled adrenal gland professional team that can complete two to three hundred adrenal gland-related surgeries using laparoscopic technology every year.

Therefore, the department has launched multidisciplinary cooperation with the Department of Urology and Imaging Department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University to integrate their respective advantages, further improve the diagnostic efficiency of patients with adrenal disease, formulate reasonable treatment and perioperative management plans, and greatly save patients’ hospitalization time and treatment costs.

(6) Pituitary disease:

There are many types of pituitary diseases with diverse manifestations, endocrine function imaging characteristics and pathological classifications, which have a wide range of impacts on various systems of the body.

Pituitary tumors have a high incidence rate and are common diseases, but only some pituitary tumors have clinical symptoms and some require treatment.

Hypopituitarism seriously affects the patient's quality of life and may even threaten life. Hormone supplementation or replacement therapy can effectively alleviate the condition.

The department is one of the centers participating in the Chinese Pituitary Disease Registry Survey.

The joint imaging department, testing center, and neurosurgery can detect the disease early through various rigorous examinations, clarify the cause of pituitary disease, classify the disease, provide standardized treatment to patients with pituitary disease, and conduct regular follow-up.

(7) Obesity:

Obesity is a disease characterized by excessive accumulation and/or abnormal distribution of fat in the body.

Obesity is a chronic epidemic worldwide. In my country, about 42% of adults and 16% of children and adolescents are overweight or obese.

Obesity increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, coronary heart disease, hypertension, hyperuricemia, fatty liver, sleep apnea syndrome, osteoarthrosis, and gallbladder disease.

Over the years, the Endocrinology Department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital has accumulated rich experience in the clinical treatment and research of obesity.

In clinical diagnosis and treatment, a comprehensive weight management plan is developed based on the individual situation of each patient, and intervention is carried out from the aspects of exercise prescription, nutritional therapy, behavioral methods and drug treatment. Good curative effects have been achieved in obese patients, especially obese patients with type 2 diabetes.

(8) Diabetes Care Consultation Clinic:

The Department of Endocrinology has about 600 outpatient visits for diabetes patients every day. In order to better educate patients with diabetes, the Department of Endocrinology has established a diabetes nursing consultation clinic on November 12, 2015. Nurses who have obtained the qualification certification of "Diabetes Health Education Nurse Practitioner" or have the title of associate senior in internal medicine or above make visits.

Since the opening of the clinic, more than 700 patients have been educated on diabetes, with good results.

The diabetes care consultation clinic determines the patient's diabetes cognitive problems based on the individualized diabetes education assessment form, and provides individualized guidance on diet and exercise, the use of hypoglycemic drugs (oral drugs, insulin), monitoring knowledge, foot care guidance, and education on diabetes complications. Everyone's situation is different, and the content of education is also different.

After the consultation, we will also record the patient's name, gender, age, contact number, etc., so as to facilitate follow-up visits to these patients in the future.

Clinic hours:

Every Tuesday and Thursday 13:00-17:00

Room 822, Endocrinology Clinic, 8th floor, Beijing Chaoyang Hospital outpatient building.

(9) Diabetes joint care clinic:

The joint care clinic of the Endocrinology Department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital officially opened in January 2018. The treatment team consists of a number of doctors, nutritionists, and diabetes health education nurses with rich experience in diabetes diagnosis and treatment.

The joint care clinic provides a complete, sustainable, effective and efficient management model for diabetes diagnosis and management. It has three integrated features: integrated management inside and outside the hospital, integrated online and offline services, and integrated software and hardware experience.

On the premise that this outpatient management model has been proven to be effective and efficient, standardized management processes and standardized service models are introduced under the management framework of hierarchical diagnosis and treatment to cover and manage more diabetic patients and benefit diabetic patients.
