Ophthalmology Department
Beijing Tongren Hospital, Affiliated to Capital Medical University
The Department of Ophthalmology and Cornea of Beijing Tongren Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University was established in 1991.
After more than 20 years of development, the corneal disease department currently has 6 chief physicians, 4 deputy chief physicians, and 2 attending physicians.
There is 1 supervisor for doctoral students, 3 supervisors for master students, and 24 hospital beds.
This specialty is mainly engaged in the clinical diagnosis, treatment and research of anterior segment diseases, including various corneal diseases, conjunctival diseases, scleral diseases, dry eye and tear duct diseases related to ocular surface diseases, etc. It also involves cataracts, glaucoma, etc. related to corneal diseases.
The Cornea Specialist performs various types of corneal transplantation, including penetrating keratoplasty, lamellar keratoplasty, tissue engineering stem cell transplantation, anterior segment reconstruction, amniotic membrane transplantation, and scleral defect repair. It also performs various types of artificial tear duct implantation, dacryocystostomy and dacryocystectomy, and surgeries for recurrent polyps.
Other specialty surgeries include drug and surgical treatment of infectious corneal ulcers, surgical treatment of congenital leukoplakia in infants and young children, and reconstructive surgery for ocular surface burns.
In addition, cooperation with other specialties is also a feature of Tongren Keratology Specialty, including autologous submandibular gland transplantation/autologous lip mucosal transplantation combined with the Department of Dentistry for the treatment of severe keratoconjunctivitis sicca;
Temporary artificial cornea vitrectomy and retinal repositioning combined with corneal transplantation are performed in cooperation with the eye trauma specialist.
In recent years, advanced surgical methods such as automatic lamellar knife deep lamellar endothelial keratoplasty and deep lamellar keratoplasty have been carried out, which have effectively improved patients' postoperative vision and significantly reduced the occurrence of corneal transplant rejection.
In addition, the exploratory start of artificial keratoplasty has brought good news to patients with refractory corneal blindness.
Beijing Tongren Eye Bank was established on June 10, 1990. It is mainly responsible for corneal donation promotion, tissue acquisition, preservation, quality evaluation, etc., and provides timely and reliable sources of corneal materials for clinical corneal transplant surgeries, thereby improving the success rate of corneal transplant surgeries.
Beijing Tongren Eye Bank has an eye tissue bank, an eye bank laboratory, a corneal transplant ward, an eye bank office, etc. It currently has 7 staff members.
It can provide sufficient fresh preserved corneas and dry preserved corneas for clinical use every year. It also provides urgently needed tissue materials such as sclera and amniotic membrane, which can basically meet the needs of clinical treatment.
Tongren Eye Bank also assisted the Ministry of Health in formulating the “Eye Bank Management Standards”.
Currently, the corneal disease major is responsible for a number of scientific research projects at all levels and publishes 5-10 research papers every year, including 3-5 SCI papers.
He has obtained 2 scientific and technological achievements in Beijing and 1 national invention patent.
Key research areas include
1. Basic research on the application of new immunosuppressants.
2. Research on immune tolerance and related regulatory mechanisms of corneal transplantation.
3. The mechanism and treatment of infectious keratopathy.
4. Traditional Chinese medicine prevents and treats immune rejection of corneal transplantation.
5. Pre-clinical research on xenogeneic porcine corneal transplantation, etc.
