General Surgery Department
Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University
The Department of General Surgery, Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University, is composed of medical staff with extensive clinical experience at the attending physician level and above.
Department Features:
The Department of General Surgery at Beijing Anzhen Hospital has distinct national medical characteristics in four areas: minimally invasive surgery for breast and thyroid tumors, minimally invasive surgery for gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic tumors, minimally invasive surgery for obesity/bariatric and diabetic metabolic diseases, and general surgery for diseases combined with cardiopulmonary conditions. Over the years, under the mentorship of nationally renowned surgical pioneers such as Wu Yingkai, Sun Yanqing, and Wu Jixiang, a solid surgical technical foundation has been established. The department boasts a team of surgical experts spanning senior, middle-aged, and young generations with strong technical capabilities.
The department is one of the earliest units in China to perform laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery. It was among the first in the country to carry out laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic radical resection for colon and rectal cancer, laparoscopic common bile duct exploration for choledocholithiasis, laparoscopic radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer, and single-port laparoscopic surgery, having performed over 40,000 endoscopic minimally invasive procedures.
For over 30 years, it has provided guidance and training on laparoscopic surgery to more than 100 hospitals nationwide, training thousands of laparoscopic and mastoscopic specialists, and has made significant contributions to the promotion and application of endoscopic knowledge. It has pioneered 27 categories of endoscopic minimally invasive and functional surgeries both domestically and internationally. It was the first in the world to establish the discipline of minimally invasive breast surgery, serving as a pioneer and trailblazer in this field in China. The department has developed distinctive features in clinical research on minimally invasive surgery for general surgical tumors and has been invited to deliver over 100 special lectures at universities and hospitals in multiple countries, with more than 50 live surgical demonstrations.
It has led the formulation of operational guidelines for endoscopic minimally invasive surgery and national expert consensus (2019 edition, first edition), standardizing the 'six-step method', 'nine-step method', and '5S objectives' for endoscopic minimally invasive surgery, which have been widely adopted by experts domestically and internationally. It has also participated in the development of the 'Expert Consensus on Clinical Application Technical Specifications for Focused Ultrasound Ablation Surgery' (2020 first edition, chaired by Lang Jinghe) and the 'Expert Consensus on Laparoscopic Simultaneous Resection for Colorectal Cancer Liver Metastases' (2014 first edition, chaired by Liu Rong).
It has innovatively proposed ten major 'theories' and 'concepts' such as 'minimally invasive tumor and functional therapy', 'minimally invasive functional lymph node dissection', 'psychological minimally invasiveness', 'physiological minimally invasiveness', and 'five surgical realms', expanding the horizons of tumor treatment theory and technology. It was the first in the world to standardize endoscopic surgical instruments into a systematic set, which has been unanimously adopted by experts worldwide. The department has conducted comprehensive, in-depth, and systematic clinical research on minimally invasive general surgery and oncological surgery, publishing over 140 academic papers in Chinese and English. It has served as chief editor, associate editor, or contributor to more than ten works, including 'Minimally Invasive and Functional Treatment of Tumors', 'Atlas of Abdominal Laparoscopic Surgery', and the 'Oncology Volume of the Chinese Medical Encyclopedia'. It has won one First Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, one Second Prize of the Military Science and Technology Progress Award, three First Prizes in the National Young and Middle-aged General Surgery Academic Competition of the Chinese Medical Association, and the Endoscopic Science and Technology Award (Outstanding Young Physician Award) from the World Endoscopy Doctors Association.
Since 2004, it has hosted the annual 'National Breast Surgery Academic Conference', now in its eighteenth session, with live surgical demonstrations. It also initiated the annual 'National Young Physicians' Minimally Invasive Surgery Video Competition' of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, playing a significant role in promoting the widespread adoption of endoscopic minimally invasive surgery. It launched the first multicenter, prospective, randomized controlled clinical study on endoscopic minimally invasive lymph node dissection for tumors in China, with results published in the internationally renowned journal Proc Mayo Clin.
Currently, the Department of General Surgery at Beijing Anzhen Hospital is a National Health and Family Planning Commission Endoscopic Technique Training Base, a Beijing Standardized Training Base for Resident Physicians and Surgical Clinical Assessment Base, a council member unit of the National Endoscopic and Minimally Invasive Professional Technical Evaluation Committee of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, a council member unit of the General Surgery Endoscopic and Minimally Invasive Professional Committee of the Chinese Association of the World Endoscopy Doctors Association, a council member unit of the Endoscopic Physician Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a standing committee member unit of the Minimally Invasive and Non-invasive Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a standing committee member unit of the Tumor Plastic Surgery Branch of the Chinese Association of Plastic and Aesthetic Medicine, a chairman unit of the General Surgery Professional Committee of the Beijing Association of Integrative Medicine, a council member unit of the Beijing Association of Integrative Medicine, a vice chairman unit of the Breast Disease Branch of the China International Exchange and Promotion Association for Medical and Healthcare, a vice chairman unit of the Breast Professional Committee of the Chinese Research Hospital Association, a chairman unit of the Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgery Branch of the China International Exchange and Promotion Association for Medical and Healthcare, and a chairman unit of the Breast Disease Expert Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association.
