Thoracic Surgery Department

Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University

The Department of Thoracic Surgery at Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University, has a long history. Its predecessor was the Beijing Tuberculosis Hospital, founded in 1955, which was a renowned northern hospital specializing in surgeries for pulmonary tuberculosis, lung cancer, and esophageal cancer. In 1984, when Beijing Anzhen Hospital was established, the Department of Thoracic Surgery inherited this tradition and continued to flourish, with steadily improving medical quality and services. In 1995 and 1998, it successfully performed China's first single-lung transplant and double-lung transplant, respectively. Since entering the new century, the department has developed rapidly, and currently primarily admits patients with diseases of the lung, esophagus, cardia, mediastinum, diaphragm, and chest wall, offering distinctive approaches in the diagnosis and treatment of many conditions.
As a member of the Lung Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Capital Medical University, lung cancer treatment has always been a key focus of the Thoracic Surgery Department at Anzhen Hospital, with over half of the inpatients being lung cancer patients. Minimally invasive incisions or video-assisted thoracoscopic lung resections have become the most common surgical approaches, with an emphasis on en bloc resection and systematic lymph node dissection of mediastinal lymph node tissue to ensure surgical outcomes. Genetic testing is performed on patient specimens to select appropriate chemotherapy drugs and targeted agents for adjuvant chemotherapy, and comprehensive measures such as radiofrequency ablation, endotracheal tumor cryotherapy, interventional therapy for malignant pleural effusion, and hyperthermic perfusion chemotherapy are used for patients with advanced lung cancer, further extending patient survival.
Leveraging the advantages of the cardiovascular specialty departments at Anzhen Hospital, concurrent cardiac and lung cancer resections, concurrent cardiac interventional therapy and lung cancer resection, and resection of locally advanced lung cancer invading the heart under cardiopulmonary bypass have all achieved excellent results. Surgeries such as giant mediastinal tumor resection with vascular replacement, pulmonary arteriovenous fistula, and colon or gastric interposition esophageal reconstruction are also traditional strengths of the department. With the introduction of endoscopic surgery, the numbers of NUSS minimally invasive procedures for pectus excavatum, sympathetic chain interruption for hyperhidrosis, mediastinoscopy, and flexible thoracoscopy under local anesthesia have increased significantly. In recent years, the indications for lung transplantation have been continuously expanded, such as the successful correction of intracardiac anomalies combined with bilateral lobar transplantation for Eisenmenger syndrome, with steadily improving postoperative survival rates.
