Urology Department

Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University

The Department of Urology at Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University, originated in 1987 and was formally established as a department in 1993. Through the tireless efforts of successive department heads and academic leaders—Professors Li Wenmao, Liu Junmin, Jiang Yongguang, and Zhang Ning—and inspired by the hospital motto of "Public Service, Diligence, Rigor, and Integrity," the department has grown over more than three decades into a comprehensive center integrating clinical care, research, and teaching. It features 37 open beds and encompasses the urology ward, operating rooms, lithotripsy center, urodynamics laboratory, and cystoscopy suite.
With six outpatient sections and state-of-the-art equipment, including a Da Vinci surgical robot, multiple laparoscopy sets, nephroscopes, flexible/rigid ureteroscopes, bipolar resectoscopes, BK ultrasound, urodynamic testing systems, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, EMS lithotripsy, and a 100-watt holmium laser, the department handles over 50,000 outpatient and emergency visits annually and performs more than 1,500 surgeries per year, making it a premier domestic urology diagnosis and treatment center.
Department Characteristics:
1. Minimally invasive surgery represented by laparoscopic and robot-assisted laparoscopic procedures. These offer advantages such as minimal trauma, shorter operative times, and rapid recovery. The department has systematically carried out endoscopic surgeries for various urological conditions, including adrenal tumors, renal tumors, ureteral tumors, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, pyeloplasty, and nephrolithotomy.
2. Standardized and integrated treatment of adrenal tumors: Leveraging the hospital's status as a national cardiovascular center, the department provides comprehensive diagnosis, precise, and minimally invasive treatment for patients with adrenal-related hypertension, aiming to become a premier domestic center for adrenal disease management.
3. Multidisciplinary and holistic treatment of prostate diseases. This includes comprehensive management of prostatitis causing male pelvic pain, benign prostatic hyperplasia leading to voiding and storage dysfunction, and prostate cancer affecting male survival (prostate biopsy, radical prostatectomy, etc.), as well as associated male urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction. This approach fosters excellent collaboration among various specialized treatments.
4. Minimally invasive treatment and effective prevention of urolithiasis. Combining percutaneous nephrolithotomy, flexible and rigid ureteroscopic lithotripsy, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, and postoperative preventive guidance, patients with urolithiasis not only receive treatment but also effective prevention.
5. Voiding and storage dysfunction, one of the most common urological conditions affecting both men and women. Precise diagnosis through urodynamics enables optimized treatment for conditions such as bladder outlet obstruction, interstitial cystitis, and female urinary incontinence (sling procedures for stress urinary incontinence, sacral neuromodulation for refractory lower urinary tract symptoms).
6. Andrology: The department carries out specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including penile prosthesis implantation for erectile dysfunction, varicocelectomy for infertility, testicular biopsy, and investigation and treatment of hemospermia. After more than three decades, the Department of Urology at Beijing Anzhen Hospital has reached maturity. The older generation worked hard and cultivated the field; the new generation builds on the past and carries forward the spirit of their predecessors. We will uphold the work ethic of "Public Service, Diligence, Rigor, and Integrity," and dedicatedly provide our patients with superb medical skills and quality service, wholeheartedly resolving their ailments.
Clinical Faculty: 15 physicians (11 chief physicians, 2 associate chief physicians, 2 attending physicians; 9 with doctoral degrees, 1 with a master's degree, 4 with bachelor's degrees, 1 postdoctoral fellow; 5 have studied abroad). Nursing staff: 18. The department serves as the residency training base for the Sixth Clinical College of Capital Medical University, is among the first batch of clinical pharmacology trial bases approved by the Ministry of Health, and is a professional base authorized by the Ministry of Education for training master's and doctoral students. It has trained numerous doctoral and master's graduates and has undertaken multiple national, provincial, and ministerial basic and clinical research projects. The department has received several national and Beijing medical awards and participated in the formulation of two national expert consensuses: "Chinese Expert Consensus on Diagnosis and Treatment of von Hippel-Lindau Disease" and "Chinese Expert Consensus on Primary Adenocarcinoma of the Urinary Bladder." It is also a designated unit for medical malpractice assessment by the Beijing Medical Doctor Association, a member of the Chinese Medical Association Urological Stone Alliance, and a Northern China Urological Stone Base unit.
