Gynecology Department

Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University, is composed of gynecology, obstetrics, and family planning divisions. It was established on December 1, 1984. As Anzhen Hospital has flourished, the strength of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has grown steadily, evolving into a comprehensive clinical department that integrates medical care, teaching, and research, offering a full range of treatment services. Its influence in the field of obstetrics and gynecology in China has been increasing. As a comprehensive department with a full range of technologies and excellent services, it not only performs various major surgeries, rescues critically ill patients, and diagnoses and treats rare cases, but also has accumulated extensive experience over many years in minimally invasive gynecological surgeries such as laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and colposcopy, forming a specialty characteristic.
Since initiating laparoscopic surgery in 1997, over 10,000 laparoscopic procedures have been performed over the past 17 years. In 2007, the obstetrics division became the Beijing Center for Transfer and Consultation of Pregnant Women with Heart Disease and the Chaoyang District Center for Transfer and Consultation of Critically Ill Pregnant Women. A rescue team led by the hospital's vice president was established, and a green channel for critically ill pregnant women was set up, operating 24/7. In 2013 alone, 87 critically ill pregnant women were successfully treated, with no preventable maternal deaths. The department is at an internationally leading level in managing pregnancy complicated by heart disease.
Currently, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Anzhen Hospital has become a comprehensive department characterized by minimally invasive gynecological and laparoscopic surgery, while also ranking among the top nationwide in gynecological oncology surgery, chemotherapy, reproductive endocrinology, infertility, and high-risk obstetrics. The department's treatment of obstetric and gynecological diseases fully embodies the principles of individualization and humanization, and its nursing care effectively supports medical treatment, earning high satisfaction from patients.
Gynecology:
A variety of laparoscopic techniques are performed, including laparoscopic lymphadenectomy for benign gynecological tumors and early-stage malignant tumors. Extensive experience has been accumulated in treating ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, and cervical cancer. Significant work has been done in using minimally invasive methods such as laparoscopy to treat early-stage endometrial and cervical cancers, as well as preserving fertility in young patients with gynecological malignancies. Novasure (three-dimensional bipolar radiofrequency endometrial ablation) is a new technology introduced in 2011 for treating dysfunctional uterine bleeding. This procedure is completed in a single session, with short operation time, few complications, mild postoperative pain, and simple anesthesia. Over 100 such procedures have been performed, resulting in significant improvement in patients' postoperative quality of life and high satisfaction.
Obstetrics:
In 2007, it became the Beijing Center for Transfer and Consultation of Pregnant Women with Heart Disease and the Chaoyang District Center for Transfer and Consultation of Critically Ill Pregnant Women. In recent years, more than ten cases of pregnancy complicated by severe primary pulmonary hypertension have been successfully treated, a condition with an average mortality rate of 50-80%. The hospital has controlled the mortality rate for this condition to within 30%. It has also successfully treated pregnant women with severe cardiac valve disease, performing thoracotomy and valve surgery concurrently with cesarean section. For pregnant women with severe heart failure in the second or third trimester, multidisciplinary collaboration has enabled cardiac surgery while preserving the fetus, ultimately ensuring the safety of both mother and child.
Family Planning:
The department is particularly skilled in using minimally invasive gynecological surgeries such as hysteroscopy and laparoscopy to manage complex family planning complications, such as incarcerated, fractured, or displaced intrauterine devices, high-risk induced abortions, cornual pregnancy, and cesarean scar pregnancy. In 2011, the new outpatient building operating room was put into use, equipped with advanced facilities including laminar flow disinfection. A daily work team composed of obstetric and gynecological specialists, anesthesiologists, and nurses performs painless hysteroscopy, family planning, and other surgeries, which can be conducted under ultrasound monitoring, ensuring safety and reliability. After surgery, patients are provided with modern and comfortable recovery rooms, allowing them to receive warm and attentive service in a pleasant environment.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Anzhen Hospital currently has 80 beds and 75 medical staff. Of the 29 physicians, over 60% hold master's degrees or higher, and over 30% have senior professional titles. The talent structure is well-balanced, with experienced experts and professors as well as energetic young physicians. We are committed to pursuing excellent medical care and providing high-quality services, fostering mutual respect between doctors and patients.
As a master's degree training unit in obstetrics and gynecology for Capital Medical University, a Ministry of Health Gynecological Endoscopy Training Base, and a Beijing Residency Training Base in Obstetrics and Gynecology, the department currently has 13 master's students enrolled and has graduated over 20. Over 10 visiting physicians are trained each year, and more than 600 endoscopic surgeons have been trained for various regions across the country. As a residency training base, several resident physicians are trained annually. The department places great emphasis on the training of young physicians, and despite staffing constraints, supports in-service physicians in pursuing further education. Physicians have been sent to study at the University of California and Seoul National University.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology currently undertakes multiple national and provincial/ministerial level projects. In recent years, over 20 projects have been completed, and 7 projects are currently underway. Numerous SCI and Chinese series articles have been published in various medical journals.
In 1997, the department performed the first gynecological gasless laparoscopic surgery in China, using Kirschner wires instead of imported equipment. Subsequently, the department designed and co-developed a gasless abdominal wall lifting device with the hospital's Equipment Department. Since 2000, it has successfully hosted over 20 international and domestic seminars, including the "China-Australia-Asia Pacific Minimally Invasive Forum," the "Sino-Japanese Abdominal Wall Suspension Gasless Laparoscopy Academic Conference," and the "Beijing Wuzhou Cardiovascular Disease Symposium Obstetrics and Gynecology Sub-forum and Management and Diagnosis of Pregnancy Complicated by Heart Disease Seminar."
