Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University
The Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University, was officially established in August 2010. It is a first-level clinical department in a Grade 3A hospital dedicated to providing mental and psychological health services. Currently, the department has 8 medical staff members on the payroll and 1 external expert, including 5 physicians: 1 chief physician, 3 attending physicians, and 1 resident physician. Among the physicians, 2 hold doctoral degrees, 2 hold master's degrees, and 1 holds a bachelor's degree.
The current department director is He Jianhua, MD, chief physician. He graduated from Peking Union Medical College Hospital and has been engaged in neuropsychiatry for 28 years. He has rich clinical experience in diagnosing and treating common conditions in general hospitals such as anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, memory disorders, and dementia, especially in managing psychiatric and psychological issues associated with physical illnesses. To further ensure medical quality, the department also employs retired chief physician Lü Qiuyun from Peking University Sixth Hospital. In addition to outpatient services, she participates in clinical difficult case discussions within the department, provides supervision for counselors, and offers strong support for the department's medical safety.
The Department of Psychiatry and Psychology currently has 1 psychotherapist, 1 psychological assessor, and 1 nurse. All three hold the psychological counselor qualification certificate issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, and one holds the psychotherapist qualification issued by the Ministry of Health. All have undergone formal training in psychological assessment at specialty hospitals.
Department Features:
The department possesses a variety of commonly used psychological assessment tools from both domestic and international sources, including psychological CT. It offers both assessor-based evaluations and computerized interactive assessment tools to objectively evaluate patients' psychological states. In addition to psychological counseling and psychotherapy, it also provides biofeedback therapy devices and speech and swallowing therapy devices to assist pharmacological treatment for conditions such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, and speech and swallowing difficulties.
Since April 2013, non-pharmacological treatment for dementia patients has been initiated: special recreational therapy, caregiver training, and monthly group therapy. In the same year, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder was introduced.
The department's current main scope of diagnosis and treatment:
1. Outpatient services: General outpatient clinics, specialist outpatient clinics, and VIP outpatient clinics are available. Pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and psychological counseling are provided for adults with mild to moderate depression, neuroses, and psychiatric and psychological abnormalities associated with physical illnesses. A memory clinic is offered, where dedicated staff conduct comprehensive cognitive assessments for patients with cognitive decline to detect dementia as early as possible and provide timely and appropriate treatment. Patients with severe depression or major psychiatric disorders are promptly referred to psychiatric specialty hospitals after initial screening.
2. Consultation: Liaison consultation is provided for inpatients with physical illnesses who develop psychiatric and psychological issues. Leveraging the characteristics of Anzhen Hospital, the "dual heart medicine" practice is implemented, offering a green channel for patients with cardiovascular diseases complicated by anxiety and depression.
3. Regular clinical difficult case discussions are held on common psychiatric and psychological issues in general hospitals, and public science education is regularly conducted. The department adheres to the principle of directing scientific research towards prevalent clinical problems in urgent need of solutions.
4. Consistent with the policy of tertiary hospital doctors serving the community, physicians at the intermediate level and above from the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology provide a half-day outpatient clinic session each week at the Datun Community Health Service Station in Chaoyang District. The Department of Psychiatry and Psychology currently has no inpatient wards.
To continuously improve medical standards, all members engage in ongoing learning and advancement, using their spare time to study psychotherapeutic techniques, including psychoanalysis, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, Motivational Interviewing clinical communication skills, and Balint groups. Regular psychological supervision within the department and psychological mutual support group activities for hospital medical staff are conducted. This provides a timely outlet for staff to release negative emotions, reducing occupational burnout and the occurrence of psychological disorders.
Since August 2010, a dementia case discussion meeting between general hospitals and psychiatric specialty hospitals in Beijing has been established, held once every two months. This has created an excellent platform for improving the dementia diagnosis and treatment skills of young and middle-aged physicians. Since April 2013, a monthly social activity for elderly individuals with dementia and their families has been held in the Datun community, aiming to enhance the caregiving skills of family members of dementia patients.
