Endocrinology Department
Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University
Department of Endocrinology, Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University, has several endocrine and metabolic disease subspecialties, including diabetes and obesity, thyroid, parathyroid and bone metabolism, hypothalamic-pituitary, and adrenal. The strong attending physician team strictly follows clinical pathways and diagnostic and treatment norms. Through close collaboration between the endocrine medical and nursing team and clinical pharmacists, nutritionists, and psychologists, a truly “patient-centered” advanced diagnosis and treatment model is realized. Specialized clinics for diabetes, obesity, thyroid, and osteoporosis have been established.
The Department of Endocrinology of Beijing Anzhen Hospital is a doctoral degree training site in endocrinology and metabolism of Capital Medical University. The department is fully responsible for clinical medicine of endocrine and metabolic diseases, residency and graduate student training and education, public health education, as well as basic and clinical research on endocrine and metabolic diseases, and carries out domestic and international exchanges and cooperation.
“Pursuing truth in science, goodness in humanities, and beauty in art” and “taking high-quality medical safety and quality as the core” are our goals and principles, and also a concrete embodiment of the spirit and connotation of Beijing Anzhen Hospital. Professor Zhou Yingsheng, the department director, has been engaged in medical education and research on endocrine and metabolic diseases for 25 years. He studied as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and the Institute for Obesity and Diabetes in the United States. He is a doctoral supervisor, a high-level talent discipline leader in the Beijing health system, and also serves as the deputy director of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Capital Medical University. Professor Zhou Yingsheng is also a committee member of the Endocrinology and Metabolism Professional Group of the Geriatrics Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, a standing committee member of the Beijing Endocrinology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a member of the Beijing Diabetes Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, vice chair of the Diabetes Professional Committee of the Beijing Health Education Association, and deputy editor-in-chief of the Chinese Journal of Experimental Animals and the Chinese Journal of Comparative Medicine, etc. The vigorous endocrine and metabolic professional team has strong technical strength, with two experts selected as high-level technical talent discipline leaders and discipline backbones in the Beijing health system. Currently, there are 13 clinical physicians, including 2 chief physicians, 5 associate chief physicians, and 4 attending physicians; 1 professor, 3 associate professors, 1 doctoral supervisor, and 2 master’s supervisors; 92% hold doctoral or master’s degrees. There is also an excellent nursing team.
The department has subspecialty groups for diabetes, thyroid, bone metabolism, hypothalamic-pituitary, adrenal, and other endocrine and metabolic diseases, and has established specialized clinics for diabetes, obesity, thyroid, and osteoporosis. The department offers expert, specialty, general, and VIP outpatient clinics for endocrine and metabolic diseases, with an annual outpatient volume of nearly 80,000 visits. The endocrine and metabolic specialty ward has 30 beds, with a beautiful and comfortable environment, advanced equipment, and complete functions, making it an ideal choice for patients to receive medical services. The main diseases diagnosed and treated include diabetes, thyroid diseases, dyslipidemia, obesity, hyperuricemia, gout, osteoporosis, parathyroid diseases, pituitary and adrenal diseases, endocrine hypertension, endocrine crisis, hypoglycemia, and other common and complex conditions.
The strong attending physician team strictly follows clinical pathways and diagnostic and treatment norms. Through close cooperation between the endocrine medical and nursing team and clinical pharmacists, nutritionists, and psychologists, a truly “patient-centered” advanced diagnosis and treatment model is realized. By establishing collaborative platforms with related disciplines and jointly formulating disease diagnosis and treatment standards, the team has successfully rescued and treated endocrine critical and difficult cases such as hypercalcemic crisis, thyroid crisis, adrenal crisis, diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar syndrome, ectopic parathyroid adenoma, insulinoma, multiple endocrine neoplasia, polyglandular autoimmune syndrome, primary aldosteronism, pheochromocytoma, and diabetes insipidus.
Currently, advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGMS), insulin pump therapy (CSII), and thyroid ultrasound-guided puncture have been carried out. Intensive insulin therapy adopts the most advanced “3C” treatment model. Clinical endocrine function tests and imaging examinations include oral glucose tolerance test, islet β-cell function assessment, islet autoantibodies, dexamethasone suppression test, supine and upright aldosterone test, water deprivation-vasopressin test, thyroid and parathyroid radionuclide imaging, octreotide imaging, quantitative measurement of visceral fat, bone density, neuropathy examination, and pancreatic tissue oxygenation measurement and analysis, etc.
The department focuses on the prevention and treatment of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, and is a certified unit for diabetes education and management by the Diabetes Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. The comprehensive diabetes prevention and treatment clinic, through advanced diabetes classification and diagnosis technology, provides etiological classification and diagnosis for newly diagnosed diabetes patients and designs individualized treatment plans. Using advanced equipment such as continuous glucose monitoring, fundus photography, and Doppler examination of limb vessels, it conducts chronic complication screening and early diagnosis, providing complete, meticulous, and thoughtful services for patients at all stages of diabetes.
The department takes the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and obesity and the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular complications as the focus of discipline construction and talent cultivation. It undertakes four National Natural Science Foundation projects, as well as multiple projects funded by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security for returned overseas scholars, the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, the Beijing Science and Technology Program, and the Capital Medical University Basic-Clinical Cooperation Research Fund, etc. A total of more than 150 professional papers have been published in foreign and domestic core medical journals, including over 10 SCI papers, and more than 10 diabetes-related academic works have been edited or contributed to. The department has successfully held many academic exchange conferences and undertook national and municipal continuing education projects such as the “Symposium on Advances in Diabetes Prevention and Cardiovascular Protection”. It has invited internationally renowned scholars in the field of cardiovascular complication prevention in type 2 diabetes, such as Professor Peter Gaede of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark (principal investigator of Steno-2), to visit the department and conduct academic exchanges. The department undertakes the endocrinology teaching tasks for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students in clinical medicine and preventive medicine, as well as international students of the International College. Currently, there are 3 doctoral students and 5 master’s students.
