Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine

Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University

The Department of Respiratory Medicine (Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine) at Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University, was established at the founding of the hospital in 1984 and officially renamed from "Department of Respiratory Medicine" to "Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM)" in 2016. It is a key department of the hospital. Through the joint efforts of generations of Anzhen respiratory professionals, the department has developed a discipline characterized by comprehensive technology and distinct strengths. It can manage all types of respiratory diseases, with particular expertise in pulmonary thromboembolism, pulmonary hypertension and other pulmonary vascular diseases, cardiopulmonary critical care, respiratory interventional procedures, and minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment. The department has been shaped by multiple major epidemic responses and repeated critical care rescues, forging a culture of "striving upward and daring to fight tough battles."
With the development of the respiratory discipline, the team has grown steadily. Currently, there are 31 physicians, including 13 chief physicians, 9 associate chief physicians, 5 attending physicians, and 4 resident physicians, along with 37 nurses and 3 technicians. The annual inpatient admissions exceed 2,600, and the annual outpatient visits exceed 100,000. The department is a master's and doctoral training site for Internal Medicine (Respiratory Diseases) at Capital Medical University, with 3 doctoral supervisors and 5 master's supervisors. It is also a national PCCM specialist training base, training and sending out a large number of specialized talents each year.
To meet the growing clinical demand for respiratory diseases, the department's functional setup has been continuously improved. It has medical units in both the Tongzhou and Chaoyang campuses, consisting of the inpatient department, outpatient department, and respiratory interventional diagnosis and treatment department:
① The inpatient department has a total of 88 beds, with 30 beds in the Tongzhou campus (15 general beds and 15 RICU beds) and 58 beds in the Chaoyang campus (42 general beds and 16 RICU beds), to admit patients with various respiratory diseases and complex critical cases such as pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary embolism, interstitial lung diseases, respiratory infections, pulmonary nodules and shadows, and respiratory critical illnesses;
② The outpatient department has independent respiratory medicine clinics, as well as specialized clinics for pulmonary vascular diseases (pulmonary embolism and pulmonary hypertension), chronic airway diseases, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary nodules and shadows, COPD, and smoking cessation. It also has functional areas such as a pulmonary function laboratory, airway reactivity and allergen testing room, outpatient comprehensive respiratory treatment room, smoking cessation room, and respiratory clinical pharmacology base, enabling outpatient management and long-term follow-up of chronic respiratory diseases;
③ The respiratory interventional diagnosis and treatment department includes a respiratory endoscopy room, pulmonary vascular intervention room, and right heart catheterization room, capable of performing various airway and pulmonary vascular interventional procedures.
