Pediatric Heart Center Internal Medicine, Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University

Department Features:
The technical advantages of Pediatric Cardiology include interventional treatment of congenital heart disease (such as atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, pulmonary stenosis, pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum, etc.) and complex congenital heart disease through combined surgical and interventional (hybrid) procedures (e.g., closure of residual defects after congenital heart surgery, collateral vessel occlusion before radical correction of tetralogy of Fallot, transcatheter dilation of pulmonary valve and pulmonary artery branches after systemic-pulmonary shunt for complex congenital heart disease with reduced pulmonary blood flow, etc.). Pediatric Cardiology has long been engaged in prenatal examination and post-natal diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart disease for grassroots institutions in Beijing and nationwide. A "green channel" for prenatal-to-postnatal diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart disease has been established from grassroots hospitals to our hospital in the Beijing area, enabling more children with congenital heart disease to receive timely and appropriate diagnosis and treatment, contributing to reducing serious birth defects and lowering neonatal and infant mortality. In addition, ultrasound diagnosis and molecular biological genetic diagnosis of pediatric cardiomyopathy are currently under clinical research.

The Pediatric Heart Center of Beijing Anzhen Hospital was personally founded by Academician Wu Yingkai in 1984. It was the first modern specialized pediatric cardiovascular department in China operating with an advanced international model of close integration of internal medicine and surgery. Over the past 30 years, it has developed into a first-class domestic and internationally influential pediatric cardiovascular disease diagnosis and treatment center with advanced medical facilities, comprehensive professional construction, and a mature technical team.

The Pediatric Cardiology Department of the center has 82 beds and over 50 medical and nursing staff, including 2 professors, 4 chief physicians, 10 associate chief physicians, 8 with doctoral degrees, and 21 with master's degrees. Most of the doctors with associate senior titles or above have overseas study experience. The department has many nationally renowned experts, professors, and graduate supervisors. It is a training base for master's and doctoral students of Capital Medical University, as well as the first batch of interventional congenital heart disease training bases designated by the Ministry of Health, and the only pediatric interventional congenital heart disease training base in the Beijing area.

Since its establishment in the 1980s, Pediatric Cardiology's professional expertise has mainly involved preoperative echocardiographic examination, cardiac catheterization and angiographic diagnosis, transcatheter interventional treatment of congenital heart disease (without thoracotomy), intensive care for congenital heart disease, diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmias, pediatric myocarditis, endocardial fibroelastosis, cardiomyopathy, Kawasaki disease, and other acquired heart diseases in children. Among these, interventional treatment of congenital heart disease, prenatal diagnosis of cardiovascular malformations, and diagnosis and treatment of cardiomyopathy are among the best in the country.

Interventional treatment of congenital heart disease is a highlight of Pediatric Cardiology's work, with over 800 interventional procedures performed annually. The treated conditions include: atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, pulmonary stenosis, coronary artery fistula, pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum, small aortopulmonary window, stent angioplasty for aortic coarctation, collateral vessel occlusion in complex congenital heart disease, interventional treatment after palliative surgery, radiofrequency ablation for arrhythmias, and pacemaker therapy.

In addition, Pediatric Cardiology has also made significant achievements in the diagnosis and treatment of acquired heart diseases in children. The clinical scoring and immunosuppressive therapy regimen for "endocardial fibroelastosis" formulated by Director Wang Huiling has been followed by pediatricians nationwide. The addition of gamma globulin to this regimen has yielded good clinical outcomes and saved many children's lives. Genetic diagnosis of cardiomyopathy is also currently under research.

Since its establishment in 1984, Pediatric Cardiology has published over 200 papers, including more than 10 SCI papers, and three monographs. It has undertaken numerous national and Beijing municipal scientific research projects, many of which have received science and technology awards from the Ministry of Health and the Beijing municipal level. In 2011, the research achievement "Establishing a Beijing Congenital Heart Disease Screening and Treatment Network" led by Director Jin Mei won the 6th Soong Ching Ling Pediatric Medicine Award. Based on the establishment of this network, our department has liaised with various maternal and child health centers around Beijing, organizing large-scale training on congenital heart disease knowledge and fetal echocardiography every year, enabling early diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart disease, and allowing children with complex congenital heart disease detected after birth to receive timely diagnosis and treatment through the green channel.
