The Cardiac Surgery Center of Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University, approved by the Ministry of Health in 2011 as a National Key Clinical Specialty, is a training base for cardiac surgery specialists designated by the Ministry of Health. It boasts a formidable cardiac surgery team led by Sun Lizhong, the disciplinary leader. The sub-specialties of great vessel surgery, valve surgery, coronary artery surgery, and congenital heart disease are each headed by renowned experts highly respected both at home and abroad. The Cardiac Surgery Center has 8 wards and is capable of performing cardiac surgical procedures such as aortic dissection treatment, total aortic replacement, total thoracoabdominal aortic replacement, complex redo cardiac surgery, valve repair, valve replacement, off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting, ventricular aneurysm resection, and correction of complex congenital heart disease.
Sun Lizhong pioneered the technique of right axillary artery cannulation for cardiopulmonary bypass with selective cerebral perfusion and total arch replacement with stented elephant trunk procedure (Sun's procedure). He was the first to carry out classic elephant trunk surgery, valve-sparing aortic root replacement, thoracoabdominal aortic replacement, and total aortic replacement, among other new procedures. He established a refined classification and treatment strategy for aortic dissection in China, leading his team to complete over 4,300 aortic surgical and interventional procedures, reducing the mortality rate to below 5%, with the treatment of aortic dissection reaching an advanced international level.
In 2009, Professor Sun Lizhong established the Beijing Institute of Major Vascular Diseases Diagnosis and Treatment at Beijing Anzhen Hospital. Through arduous efforts, remarkable achievements have been made, winning 3 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 7 provincial or ministerial awards, and a total of 26 Chinese and US invention patents and utility model patents. The center's clinical, scientific research, and academic levels have been widely acclaimed by the international academic community. Surgical treatment of critical coronary heart disease, valvular heart disease, arrhythmias, end-stage heart failure, complex aortic aneurysms, and acute aortic dissection is the clinical focus of development at the Cardiac Surgery Center of Beijing Anzhen Hospital.
The Cardiac Surgery Center of Beijing Anzhen Hospital is rich in research-oriented human resources. Currently, there are over 350 medical and nursing staff, including 6 doctoral supervisors, more than 20 master's supervisors, 1 postdoctoral mobile station, and over 40 cardiologists with senior professional titles. The center holds 1 chairperson, 1 vice-chairperson, 2 standing committee members, and 4 committee members of national academic committees. In the past 5 years, 20 patents have been obtained, 4 people have won the Golden Knife Award from the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, 4 people have received the “Hundred” level talent training funding under the Beijing “Ten-Hundred-Thousand” High-Level Health Talents Program, and 1 person has received the “Ten” level talent funding. Head Nurse Liu Shuyuan from the Cardiac Surgery Department was awarded the 42nd Florence Nightingale Medal in 2009.
The Cardiac Surgery Center of Beijing Anzhen Hospital has abundant research-usable clinical resources, with a total of 360 beds. In 2012, over 8,000 cardiac surgeries were completed, with more than 20 team leaders independently completing over 200 surgeries per year, and the surgical volume continues to grow rapidly. The center is currently undertaking multiple national-level projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation, provincial and ministerial-level projects including key projects of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission and the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission's Science and Technology Plan, as well as the Capital Medical Development Fund, etc. It serves as a training base for high-level talents, laying a solid foundation for cultivating academic leaders and building research teams nationwide.
