Blood Transfusion Department
Peking Union Medical College Hospital
Transfusion medicine not only involves clinical blood transfusion treatment in internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics, and critical care medicine, but also involves basic medical fields such as serology, immunology, virology, molecular biology, and transplantation medicine, and has gradually developed into an independent medical discipline. According to the needs of disciplinary development, in 1978 the blood bank of Peking Union Medical College Hospital was separated from the laboratory department and reorganized into an independent blood transfusion department. At present, the main work contents of the Blood Transfusion Department are: blood storage management, pre-transfusion laboratory testing and transfusion efficacy and risk assessment, laboratory testing and monitoring and evaluation of transfusion reactions, molecular biology testing related to blood transfusion and transplantation, blood cell separation therapy, autologous blood transfusion, guidance on the rational application of blood components in clinical blood transfusions, scientific research and teaching related to transfusion medicine, etc., and gradually strengthen the quality control of clinical blood transfusion management. Since its establishment, the Blood Transfusion Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital has accumulated rich clinical experience through continuous clinical practice in the identification of rare blood types, difficult blood matching and other pre-transfusion compatibility tests, providing patients with safer blood transfusion treatments. Through active communication with the clinic, we guide the selection of blood components in clinical blood transfusions, making clinical blood transfusions more reasonable, ensuring the therapeutic effect of blood transfusions while reducing the risk of adverse reactions to blood transfusions. He has rich experience in the field of blood cell separation treatment. He has cooperated with the clinic to complete hundreds of clinical treatments such as peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cell collection and pathological blood cell removal and plasma exchange, and achieved good results. While ensuring safe clinical blood transfusions, the Blood Transfusion Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital encourages employees to carry out scientific research activities. It has published many academic papers in core domestic journals. The main research directions are identification of rare blood types, screening and identification of unexpected antibodies, epidemiological investigations related to blood transfusions, blood transfusion management and quality control, etc. It is also preparing to carry out scientific research projects in the fields of immunology, molecular biology and other areas related to blood transfusions. In October 2007, the WHO-funded project "Establishment of Monitoring, Reporting and Evaluation System for Adverse Transfusion Reactions" was completed, and commissioned by the Ministry of Health, the company organized and compiled the "Technical Operating Procedures for Hospital Blood Transfusion Department (Blood Bank)". There are many abnormal changes in the actual work of the blood transfusion department. For example, the blood inventory must be adjusted in time according to the changing regional blood supply situation and clinical needs, both to ensure sufficient clinical blood and to prevent waste caused by excessive blood storage; in the pre-transfusion compatibility test, an individualized test plan must be developed based on the serological characteristics of each individual;Since in vitro tests cannot fully reflect the biological processes in the body, timely response plans must be formulated for possible adverse reactions to blood transfusions. The uncertainty in these links increases the probability of errors, which places higher requirements on the quality management of the blood transfusion department. The Blood Transfusion Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital was the first in the industry to compile quality management documents such as the Blood Transfusion Management Quality Manual and Blood Transfusion Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures based on the ISO9000 model. It initially established a quality management system for the Blood Transfusion Department and achieved good results during the implementation process, providing effective guarantee for safe blood transfusions. Transfusion medicine is an emerging discipline that is gradually developing. It involves many medical fields and intersects with many medical disciplines, and has broad development prospects. However, due to certain limitations in the understanding of blood transfusion medicine, the development of domestic blood transfusion medicine is relatively slow compared with the same industry abroad. In recent years, in order to get rid of the problem of transfusion-transmitted diseases, the country has increased its attention and investment in blood collection and supply institutions. Blood screening technology has developed rapidly to provide safer blood for clinical use.
