北京协和医院外科在老一辈外科学家曾宪九教授和钟守先教授等的领导和努力下，早在上个世纪的50年代就开展了肝脏手术，是国内开展肝脏切除手术最早的医院之一，之后在北京协和医院基本外科肝脏专业组的基础上发展到肝脏外科中心，一直到目前独立的肝脏外科，经历了半个世纪的成长过程，至今发展壮大。
原卫生部副部长黄洁夫教授为科室名誉主任。黄教授为国际、国内著名的肝脏外科专家，是公认的九十年代中期国内第二次肝移植高潮的推动者和学术带头人。他是中国器官移植委员会（OTC）的主任委员，同时是美国肝脏移植协会终身会员，哈佛大学、斯坦福大学和麻省理工学院等的客座教授。他多年来致力于肝脏移植和肝胆恶性肿瘤的外科学研究，并达到很深的学术造诣，擅长肝脏高难度手术及疑难重症的诊治。
