Urology Department

The Department of Urology of Peking Union Medical College Hospital was founded in the 1940s. In the 1950s, the specialty of a certain scale was established by the older generation of medical scientists Yu Songting, Wu Jieping, and Shi Xien. From the 1960s to the 1980s, experts and professors such as Liu Guozhen, Wu Decheng, and Zang Meifu developed it into a well-known professional department of urology in China. Inspired by the motto of “Rigorousness, Refinement, Diligence, and Dedication” and decades of hard work by generations of people, Xiehe University has developed into a first-class department in the country with specialized fields such as adrenal surgery, minimally invasive urological surgery, kidney transplantation, urological and male genital tract tumors, urinary tract stones, general urology, andrology. The Urology Department of our hospital currently has 3 wards with 110 ward beds (92 general wards and 18 special needs wards). It has advanced and complete inspection, examination and treatment facilities, which can carry out various clinical examinations, tests and treatments.In addition to multiple sets of laparoscopic surgery equipment, 3D laparoscopic equipment, robotic laparoscopic surgery systems and imaging integrated operating rooms, it also has domestic first-class cystoscopy imaging equipment (Figure 1), ureteroscopes and flexible ureters, percutaneous nephroscopy, 2um laser, 1.9um laser, holmium laser, EMS Lithotripter, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripter (Figure 2), ultrasonic diagnostic instrument, imaging urodynamic diagnostic instrument (Figure 3), prostate cancer brachytherapy instrument, sexual function diagnostic instrument, biofeedback therapy instrument and advanced urology diagnostic and treatment equipment. It treats more than 4,000 inpatients every year, and performs 3,900 surgeries each year, of which about 1/3 are difficult and complex surgeries. The annual outpatient volume has exceeded 120,000, and the annual outpatient surgeries (including cystoscopy) have been 4,500. In order to facilitate patients' medical treatment, the outpatient clinic has sub-specialty clinics such as andrology, stone, oncology, and adrenal surgery. Our department currently has 35 doctors (Figure 4), 32 nurses and 3 technicians. Among them, there are 9 chief physicians, 10 deputy chief physicians, 12 attending physicians, 3 residents, and 10 graduate students.Currently, there is one standing committee member of the Urology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, one deputy director of the Urology Branch of the Beijing Medical Association, one vice president of the Andrology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, one president of the Andrology Branch of the Beijing Medical Association, and Urology Expert Committee of the Beijing Medical Award Foundation. There is one chairman, one deputy chairman of the Urology Oncology Committee of the Beijing Oncology Society, and several members of other societies; one editorial board member of the "Chinese Journal of Urology", one editorial board member of the "Chinese Journal of Surgery", one deputy editor-in-chief of the "Chinese Journal of Andrology", and editorial boards of many other professional magazines. Our department is responsible for teaching urology surgery at China Union Medical College. As a standardized training base for residents in Beijing and a clinical postdoctoral mobile station, our department has trained a large number of outstanding residents and postdoctoral fellows. As a training base for primary medical institutions across the country, it receives short-term training (LEAP) for urologists from across the country on rational drug use every year. It is one of the earliest doctoral degree-granting sites in urology authorized by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in China. It currently has 6 doctoral supervisors and 5 master's supervisors. In recent years, it has trained more than 30 doctoral and master's students.Currently, it recruits 6-8 doctoral and master's degree students every year, and currently has 10 on-the-job graduate students. As a key clinical specialty of the Ministry of Health, our department hosts several national conferences every year. It has won 1 Science and Technology Progress Award from the Ministry of Health, 1 China Medical Science and Technology Award, 1 Huaxia Medical Award, more than 20 University Scientific Research and Medical Achievement Awards, and a National Science and Technology Progress Award in cooperation with other departments. There are many research projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China. We attach great importance to academic standards, encourage scientific research design and publish academic papers, and publish more than 30 domestic core journal articles and SCI articles every year. Obtained 5 national invention patents. On February 22, 2017, Liu Yandong, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, visited Peking Union Medical College Hospital for investigation. Vice Premier Liu Yandong, Director of the National Health and Family Planning Commission Li Bin and others came to the urology ward of Union Hospital. Vice Premier Liu Yandong learned in detail about Union Medical College’s medical services, quality management and cost control, hospital culture construction, etc. He fully affirmed Union Medical College’s philosophy of “treating patients like relatives and colleagues like family members” and Union Hospital’s experience in medical services, quality and safety management, medical research, talent training, medical support, and rational drug use.At present, the Department of Urology in our hospital is a dynamic, united and enterprising team. In recent years, there has been a gratifying and strong development momentum. We will continue to expand advantageous projects, and within the framework of the overall development of the hospital, we will pioneer and innovate, continuously improve medical technology and service quality, promote clinical and basic research in urology, and cultivate more professional talents. We will definitely make due contributions to the Chinese medical cause.
