Orthopedics Department

Peking Union Medical College Hospital

one. Overview The Department of Orthopedics of Peking Union Medical College Hospital was formerly the Orthopedics Professional Group of the Department of Surgery of Peking Union Medical College Hospital. It was founded in the 1920s and was the only orthopedic medical, teaching and scientific research center in my country at that time. Many seniors in my country's orthopedic field, such as Meng Jimao, Fang Xianzhi, Wang Guisheng, Feng Chuanhan, Wu Zhikang, Wang Fuquan, Song Xianwen, Zhang Guangbo, Lu Shibi, etc., have taught and worked here. After the unremitting efforts of several generations of orthopedists, especially under the leadership of Academician Qiu Guixing, Union Orthopedics has now become a national key discipline of the Ministry of Education, a key clinical discipline of the Ministry of Health, the Orthopedic Medical Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Beijing Key Laboratory of Genetics of Skeletal Deformities. It has ranked among the top five in the country in the reputation rankings of Chinese hospital specialties for 11 consecutive years. At present, the department has established three clinical diagnosis and treatment centers: spine surgery center, joint surgery center, and orthopedic trauma center. It has also established more than ten sub-professional groups such as sports medicine, minimally invasive spine, bone tumors, foot and ankle surgery, and pediatric orthopedics. The general department currently has 132 beds and is also equipped with special wards. The outpatient clinic has a general orthopedics clinic, an orthopedics specialist clinic, and an orthopedics international medical clinic to meet the clinical needs of different patients. The Orthopedic Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day and provides medical services to patients at any time.Currently, the annual outpatient volume exceeds 150,000, and the annual inpatient surgery volume exceeds 5,000. The general practice currently has 50 doctors and full-time technicians, including 1 academician, 19 chief physicians, 13 deputy chief physicians, 13 attending physicians, 3 residents, and 1 full-time technician. 41 people have doctorate degrees. There are 10 doctoral supervisors and 15 master’s supervisors. Currently, there are 2 postdoctoral students, 20 doctoral candidates, and 10 master candidates. two. Served as Director of Orthopedics 1921, the first Director of Orthopedics: George Wilson Van Gorder 1929, the second Director of Orthopedics: Leo J. Miltner 1936, the third Director of Orthopedics: Meng Jimao 1957, the fourth Director of Orthopedics: Wang Guisheng 1981, the fifth Director of Orthopedics: Wu Zhikang 1993, the sixth Director of Orthopedics: Li Shiying In 1995, the seventh director of orthopedics: Qiu Guixing. In 2010, the eighth director of orthopedics: Weng Xisheng. In 2018, the ninth director of orthopedics: Jiang Jianguo 3. Professional Features Spine surgery is the traditional advantageous discipline of our department. In 1982, Wu Zhikang initiated and established the Spine Surgery Group of the Orthopedic Society of the Chinese Medical Association and served as the first and second group leader. The first national scoliosis study class was held, which established Union Orthopedics’ leading position in the field of scoliosis research and trained and delivered a large number of leaders in spinal orthopedics to the country. In terms of idiopathic scoliosis, in order to maximize the correction rate, reduce surgical trauma, and improve surgical safety, the Concorde classification of idiopathic scoliosis (PUMC classification) proposed by Academician Qiu Guixing won the second prize of the 2005 National Science and Technology Progress Award. In terms of congenital scoliosis, we are the first in China to carry out anterior and posterior epiphyseal block, one-stage anterior and posterior combined hemivertebral resection, posterior one-stage hemivertebral resection, and posterior one-stage total spondylectomy, and have established the largest international hemivertebral resection database. In terms of research on the causes of congenital scoliosis, Academician Qiu Guixing’s team discovered the pathogenic relationship between the TBX6 gene and congenital scoliosis. The relevant research was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which further enhanced the international leading position of Union Orthopedics in the field of spinal deformity and won the first prize of the Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education. He was the first to carry out diagnosis, treatment and research on early-onset scoliosis in China, and developed non-fusion techniques such as hemivertebra excision, short-segment fusion and growing rod technology. Professor Jianguo was the first to propose the osteotomy plus growing rod technique (Hybrid technique) in the world for the treatment of severe early-onset scoliosis and achieved good results. In addition, as a collaborative team of the National Center for Rare Diseases, the diagnosis and treatment of rare spinal and skeletal deformities, such as syndromic scoliosis, osteogenesis imperfecta, and SMA, are also at the leading level in the country. In recent years, under the leadership of Director Chen Jianguo, minimally invasive treatments for spinal degeneration, such as transforaminal endoscopy, posterior endoscopy UBE, and tunnel disc resection, spinal canal decompression, and endoscopic intervertebral fusion surgeries, have also developed rapidly, reducing patient trauma and enabling rapid recovery. At the same time, lateral fusion (OLIF) was applied to adult spinal deformity and degenerative lumbar scoliosis, achieving minimally invasive treatment of spinal deformity. At the same time, the treatment of craniocervical deformities was strengthened, and double osteotomy technology was implemented on patients with severe ankylosing spondylitis kyphosis, which significantly improved the orthopedic effect of such patients and won unanimous praise from patients. The related results won the first prize of the 2020 Peking Union Medical College Hospital Medical Achievement Award.Joint surgery has carried out artificial joint replacement as early as the 1970s. At present, in addition to routine knee and hip replacements, new technologies such as shoulder, elbow, ankle and other joint replacements, and robot-assisted joint replacements are also carried out. The level of joint revision is at the leading level in the country. The first joint surgery for hemophilia was carried out in China, reaching the international advanced level. The Orthopedic Trauma Center relies on the strong comprehensive medical capabilities of Peking Union Medical College Hospital to carry out surgical treatment of hip fractures and osteoporotic fractures in the elderly, which has greatly improved the survival rate and quality of life of patients and achieved good results. The sports medicine major performs minimally invasive surgeries such as arthroscopic cruciate ligament reconstruction, rotator cuff reconstruction, and meniscal repair. The foot and ankle major performs new technologies such as correction of complex foot and ankle deformities and 3D printing-assisted osteotomy to correct rare limb deformities, all of which have reached the leading level in the country. The bone tumor specialty carries out total femur tumor resection and reconstruction, diagnosis and treatment of tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO), minimally invasive treatment of spinal metastases, and other technologies, which have greatly improved the quality of life of patients.Four. Received provincial and ministerial awards, two second-class National Science and Technology Progress Awards, two third-class National Science and Technology Progress Awards, one first-class Natural Science Award from the Ministry of Education, one second-class Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, one third-class National Education Commission Award, one third-class Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award, and one 5. Outlook The Department of Orthopedics of Peking Union Medical College Hospital has gone through a hundred years of ups and downs and witnessed the emergence, development and growth of modern orthopedics in my country. All members of Xiehe Orthopedics will carry forward the Xiehe spirit of rigor, refinement, diligence, and dedication, stand at the forefront of disciplinary development, innovate independently, forge ahead, and create a new century of glory.
