Oncology Department

The Department of Medical Oncology of Peking Union Medical College Hospital is a key clinical specialty construction project department of the National Health Commission, one of the first batch of tumor multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment pilot departments of the National Health Commission, one of the first batch of specialist research wards of the Beijing Research Ward Demonstration Construction Unit, and the presiding unit of the Dongcheng District Cancer Treatment and Xicheng District Cancer Prevention and Treatment Quality Control and Improvement Center. The Department of Medical Oncology is the earliest professional oncology department established in China. Since its establishment, the company has developed rapidly and has strong professional and technical strength. The department currently has more than 40 medical staff, including 4 professors, 8 associate professors, 7 attending physicians, and 2 researchers. Among the 19 doctors, 15 have doctorates and 4 have master's degrees. Most of the doctors have overseas study experience, forming a talent echelon with balanced development. The department currently has three wards: the first ward of medical oncology of the West Hospital, the second ward of tumor and hematology, and the outpatient chemotherapy clinic area. The annual outpatient volume exceeds 60,000 and the number of inpatients reaches 6,000. The department also undertakes medical tasks for senior officials in health care, aid to Australia and border areas, and other countries and Beijing.The department is committed to the diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of various solid tumors, and has formed sub-professional teams for head and neck tumors, thoracic tumors (lung cancer, breast cancer), digestive system (esophagus, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and pancreatic) tumors, urogenital system (kidney, ureter, bladder, prostate) tumors, neuroendocrine tumors, soft tissue tumors and rare tumors such as mesothelioma and melanoma, to carry out drug treatments such as chemotherapy, hot perfusion chemotherapy, molecular targeted therapy and immunotherapy. In addition to accumulating rich experience in common tumors, he also has unique experience in the diagnosis and treatment of complex and difficult cases such as rare tumors, geriatric tumors, and tumors with comorbidities, and his treatment level ranks among the top in the country. The department actively promotes multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment and organizes and participates in the Multidisciplinary Diagnosis and Treatment Team (MDT) of Union Hospital for pancreas, digestive tract tumors, chest tumors, intracranial germ cell tumors, head and neck tumors, urinary system tumors, brain metastases, and thyroid cancer.On the basis of daily clinical work, the department also undertakes a large amount of clinical research work on new anti-tumor drugs. As a national-level clinical trial base for cancer drugs, it has designed, undertaken and participated in more than 200 global and national multi-center clinical studies, helping a number of new drugs to be approved for clinical use, providing Chinese cancer patients with more treatment options and greater survival benefits. As a training center for doctoral and master's degree students at Union Medical College, the department is responsible for teaching both doctoral and master's degree students. Currently, it has 2 doctoral supervisors and 3 master's supervisors. It trains several oncology professionals for oncology specialties across the country every year, and holds national-level continuing education classes every year, attracting a large number of oncology specialists from all over the country to come for further study. The department also pays attention to maintaining regular exchanges with well-known academic institutions at home and abroad, and has established academic ties with world-class cancer research institutions such as MD Anderson, Mayo clinic, John Hopkins, NYP, UCLA, UCSF, Japan Cancer Research Ariake Hospital and the National Cancer Center of Japan. Every year, internationally renowned scholars are invited to the hospital for exchanges.The department cooperates closely with the National Key Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and conducts research on cell biology, molecular biology, and tumor immunology. It has undertaken or participated in the completion of a number of national and ministry research projects such as the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan", "863", the National Natural Science Foundation, the Central High-level Hospital Clinical Research Project, and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Innovation Project. It also undertakes a number of national and Beijing cancer nursing research projects. The department is full of talents. Many members of the department serve as chairman and deputy chairman of important domestic societies such as the Chinese Medical Association, the Chinese Medical Doctors Association, the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association, and the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology. They have taken the lead or participated in the preparation and revision of many guidelines from the National Health Commission, the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology, etc., and have promoted the standardized treatment of solid tumors in China.
