Beriberi heart disease is a type of high-output heart disease caused by severe and prolonged deficiency of vitamin B1 (thiamine). If neurological manifestations predominate, it is called dry beriberi; if heart failure predominates, it is called wet beriberi. This disease is currently rare. The former manifests as ascending symmetric peripheral neuritis, sensory and motor disturbances, decreased muscle strength, and some cases develop foot drop and toe drop, with a steppage gait when walking. The latter manifests as weakness, fatigue, palpitations, and shortness of breath.
