Intercostal neuritis

Internal Medicine

Painful mass and tenderness at the costal cartilage. Also known as Tietze's disease. It is more common in individuals aged 20–40 years, frequently occurring at the junction of the second and/or third costal cartilage with the sternum, and occasionally at other ribs or the sternoclavicular joint. It is usually a single lesion. The etiology may be related to viral infection or trauma. The course may last several hours or days but can recur, usually resolving spontaneously within months; in rare cases, it may persist for several years. Treatment commonly includes hot compresses, analgesic drugs, local injection of prednisolone acetate, and sometimes oral moroxydine.
