Papillary muscle dysfunction syndrome refers to dysfunction of the papillary muscles to which the atrioventricular valves and chordae tendineae are attached, due to ischemia, necrosis, or fibrosis, resulting in impaired systolic function and atrioventricular valve regurgitation. Among these, mitral regurgitation caused by left ventricular papillary muscle dysfunction is the most common, and is frequently seen in coronary heart disease.
