Since the 20th century, extensive clinical and animal studies have demonstrated that chronic excessive alcohol consumption can cause cardiomyopathy characterized by reduced cardiac output. Since 1985, many scholars have advocated the term alcoholic heart disease as the disease name, because its primary etiology is alcohol, cardiac systolic function can improve significantly after abstinence, and the pathological changes are not limited to the myocardium alone.
