Variant angina pectoris (Prinzmetal's angina) is a special type of angina secondary to large coronary artery spasm, characterized by attacks occurring at rest, unrelated to exertion or mental stress, relieved by lying down, and accompanied by ST-segment elevation. It can lead to acute myocardial infarction, severe arrhythmias (including ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation), and sudden death.
