Transposition of the great arteries

Internal Medicine / Surgery

Transposition of the great arteries refers to changes in the relationship between the great vessels due to developmental malformations, including complete transposition of the great vessels, congenitally corrected transposition of the great vessels, double outlet right ventricle, and transposition of the great vessels with single ventricle, among which complete transposition of the great vessels is the most common. Complete transposition of the great vessels, also known as D-transposition of the great vessels, occurs when the aorta arises from the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery arises from the left ventricle, with the aorta located anterior and to the right of the pulmonary artery. It is often accompanied by atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, pulmonary stenosis, aortic stenosis, persistent atrioventricular canal, and tricuspid atresia.
