Facial muscles are divided into two parts: the muscles of facial expression and the masticatory muscles. The former is innervated by the facial nerve, while the latter is innervated by the motor branch of the trigeminal nerve. The facial muscle paralysis described here only discusses paralysis of the muscles of facial expression, namely the content related to facial nerve palsy. Facial nerve palsy is relatively common among cranial nerve disorders and is classified into five main types based on etiology: idiopathic (Bell's), traumatic, infectious, neoplastic, and neurogenic. Idiopathic facial nerve palsy, i.e., Bell's palsy, is introduced in detail as a separate disease. Other types of facial nerve palsy are described here.
