Atrial fibrillation, abbreviated as AF, is the most common sustained arrhythmia. The overall incidence of AF is 0.4%, and the incidence increases with age, reaching up to 10% in people over 75 years old. During AF, the atrial excitation rate reaches 300–600 beats per minute, and the ventricular rate is often fast and irregular, sometimes reaching 100–160 beats per minute. Not only is it much faster than the normal heart rate, but it is also absolutely irregular, and the atria lose effective contractile function.
