Long-term poorly controlled hypertension can cause changes in cardiac structure and function, termed hypertensive heart disease, including early left ventricular diastolic dysfunction and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), which may progressively develop into decreased myocardial contractile function and eventually heart failure. Studies have shown that 70% of heart failure is caused by hypertension. Concurrently, related cardiac comorbidities such as coronary heart disease and atrial fibrillation may also occur.
